ASM Elects New Equity and Inclusion Committee Chair
MADISON, WI — On Wednesday, the ASM Student Council elected Anjali Subramanian as the new Equity and Inclusion Chair for the 28th Session.
Subramanian, who serves as President of UW-Madison’s Health Care Inclusion Initiative and has been highly involved with the Sunrise Movement, is looking forward to her new role. “I’m excited about creating a culture change at UW-Madison in the way we advocate for and impact issues surrounding equity and inclusion on campus,” said Subramanian.
ASM Diverse Engagement Coordinator Ndemazea Fonkem expressed her excitement to work with the new Equity and Inclusion Chair. “[Subramanian] has been a dedicated committee member, and she is passionate about student advocacy and supporting the committee’s initiatives as they develop organically,” said Fonkem. “I’m excited to see what she can do in the EIC position!”
Subramanian replaces former Equity and Inclusion Chair Djamal Lylecyrus, who resigned from the role last month. Fonkem was serving as the acting Equity and Inclusion Chair until tonight’s election.
Also on Wednesday, ASM voted in support of drafting future legislation calling for the creation of a new statewide student governance organization. The measure, which was first approved by the UW-Stevens Point students, was introduced and advocated for by UW-Stevens Point Student Body President Will Scheder. ASM is the third school to officially express support for Scheder’s resolution.
ASM Legislative Affairs Chair MGR Govindarajan felt that the initiative would elevate all UW students’ voices. "Shared Governance is what allows for students to organize and have their voice heard,” said Govindarajan. “However, one of the biggest problems we face in making effective change is gathering support from outside Madison. As Legislative Affairs Chair, I’ve had trouble finding support from other UW Campuses to support Assembly Bill 362, which ASM officially supported two weeks ago. Having a statewide Shared Governance organization would put more weight behind state level advocacy.”
Finally, on Wednesday, ASM approved one appointment each to the Equity and Inclusion Committee, Student Services Finance Committee, and Sustainability Committee.
The next Student Council meeting will be on Wednesday, October 27th at 6:30 p.m. in the Hearing Room on the 4th Floor of the Student Activity Center at 333 East Campus Mall.
