“Students to Rally for UW Foundation Fossil Fuel Divestment”

Students from around the UW System will unite in Madison this Friday for a Divestment Day of Action to continue their ongoing calls for the University of Wisconsin Foundation to divest their $4 billion endowment from the fossil fuel industry:

“This event in particular is really special,” said Molly McGuire, who co-founded the UW Divestment Coalition (UWDC). “Students from around the system are once again uniting to engage the public about the destructive actions of our university.”

UWDC is a collective of students challenging their university through direct-action events, legal and legislative complaints, and campus community involvement.

This summer the Department of Financial Institutions reviewed a complaint submitted by the Climate Defense Project in coordination with students from around the state. The complaint was dismissed due to a missing enforceability clause. However, in the Wisconsin State Journal, the “DFI said all ‘prudent’ financial institutions should consider how climate-related financial risks may factor into their business plans and bottom lines — regardless of whether the 2009 law applies.”

“I want to be proud of where I go to college,” said Lucia Flores, UWDC event coordinator and University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point student. “It’s hard to do that when I know the actions of my university directly undermine the very values we seek to promote.”
