ASM Considers Raising Paid Student Position Wages

MADISON, WI — On Wednesday, the ASM Student Council introduced legislation that would raise the minimum wage for paid student positions to $12.00 per hour.

The legislation, which is sponsored by Press Office Director Tyler Katzenebrger and Legislative Affairs Chair MGR Govindarajan, would raise wages by changing the ASM bylaws that currently mandate all student positions be paid $10.50 per hour. The Student Council previously voted to increase the wage to $12.00 per hour when approving ASM’s Fiscal Year 2023 Internal Budget, but the ASM Student Services Finance Committee reversed this decision due to conflicts with the aforementioned bylaw.

At tonight’s meeting, the Student Council passed the first of two votes required to change the bylaw. The second vote will occur at their next meeting in two weeks.

“It was great to see Student Council vote in favor to raise the wage yesterday,” Govindarajan said in response to the first vote on the legislation. “It’s the first step in ensuring students all across campus are able to pursue their education and get a paid living wage.”

If increased, the minimum wage for student positions would more closely align with ASM-funded wages for Front Desk and Student Activity Center Staff, both of which were increased to $13.00 per hour this year due to staffing shortages.

Also on Wednesday, ASM appointed Estella Torgerson to fill a College of Engineering seat on the Student Council.

The next Student Council meeting will be on Wednesday, February 9 at 6:30 p.m., with the meeting format to be determined due to high COVID-19 case counts in Dane County. Any in-person meeting will take place in the Hearing Room on the 4th Floor of the Student Activity Center at 333 East Campus Mall.
