Instructional Planning Tool (IPT) Accessibility and Usability Information

This document summarizes the accessibility and usability barriers identified during testing as well as how to get help.

The Instructional Planning Tool (IPT) application was created to meet the curriculum planning needs of the School of Social Work. Department administrators, program coordinators, and curricular representatives can use IPT to create and review course planning data for future terms. Instructors can use IPT to share their teaching preferences for upcoming semesters with department admins.

Accessibility and usability barriers

The following information is provided to help people with disabilities know what potential barriers may exist.

Keyboard navigation barriers may limit accessibility for some users, such as people with motor disabilities

Throughout the application, tooltips are used to provide additional information on mouse hover. These tooltips are not accessible by keyboard.

Horizontal scrolling is often required to access all page content, especially at higher levels of page magnification.

Screen reader barriers may limit accessibility for some users, such as people who are blind or have low vision

Tables are used to structure forms throughout the application, which could make it difficult for users of assistive technology to navigate to and use the form fields. Certain tables are particularly difficult to navigate due to merged cells and lack of table header tags.

Within forms, there are several instances of form controls (combo boxes, radio button groupings, checkboxes, etc.) that are missing labels, and labels that exist but are not properly associated with their respective form controls.

Some pages lack appropriate heading structure due to missing heading tags and skipped heading levels.

Status messages are often not announced upon completion of an action or submission of a form. When links open in a new tab, there is no prior announcement.

Additionally, tooltips throughout the application are not accessible to screen reader users since they are not accessible by keyboard.

Magnification and reflow barriers may limit accessibility for some users, such as people who are color blind or have low vision

Some elements do not reflow well at 300% page magnification or higher. For example, the secondary nav menu items at the top of the page crash into one another at 300% zoom.

Horizontal scrolling is often required to access all page content, especially at higher levels of page magnification.

Low contrast may limit accessibility for some users, such as people who are color blind or have low vision

Throughout the application, bright red text is used for announcements and status messages. This shade of red has a contrast ratio of only 4:1 against the white page background.

On the Admin Tools page, there is light gray heading text that has a contrast ratio of only 2.2:1 against the white page background.
