How do I access course content in Canvas once I am enrolled?
1. How do I obtain permission to enroll in a course?
- Complete the online request located on the senior guest auditor webpage, preferably before the first day of the term. Once the form is complete and submitted it goes directly to the instructor and/or department. Wait for course audit approval or denial sent to your wisc.edu email. If you receive permission to audit the course you will receive an email with all the information you need to enroll.
2. When can I enroll in courses?
After you obtain permission to enroll in the course and the department enters an electronic permission into the system. You will be notified via your wisc.edu email. For all guest auditors, enrollment starts on the first day of the term.
3. Where can I find my assigned enrollment date and time?
You can find your assigned enrollment time on the “Course Search & Enroll” tile in MyUW. Log into "Course Search & Enroll" under the "My Courses" tab and it will be listed there.
4. Why does it say "No Enrollment Appointment" in My Cart in Course Search and Enroll?
- If you do not have an enrollment appointment, you are not an admitted guest auditor for the upcoming term. You will need to apply to become a guest auditor for the term you would like to audit.
5. What if I do not hear back about permission to audit a course(s) before the first day of class?
- If the course is face-to-face/in person, attend the first day of class. Tell the instructor you submitted an online permission form that was sent to them via email and the date you submitted the form. If the instructor gives you verbal permission, they will need to notify their department staff to enter permission for you. Once permission is entered, you will receive an email with the course information you will need to enroll. Use these instructions when enrolling:
- If the course is online, please do NOT email the professor or call/contact their department office. Contact our office at seniorauditor@dcs.wisc.edu or 608-263-6960 and we will follow up on your behalf.
6. I get an error message when I try to enroll in a class, (via Course Search & Enroll), what should I do?
Chrome or Firefox web browsers work best for Course Search & Enroll.
Examples of common enrollment errors list and how to rectify them below:
Course validation failed: Enrollment Requisites are not met.
Course validation failed: You will need to obtain permission to enroll in this class.
Course enrollment failed: You were not enrolled. This class requires permission to enroll because the deadline to enroll has passed.
Course enrollment failed: Unable to add this class.
- You might be seeing an error message from the last time you attempted to add the course to your cart or enroll. Revalidate the course in your cart and select the checkbox next to the course and click the Revalidate button.
- Is it the day of or after your assigned enrollment date and time? (All audit enrollment appointments begin on the first day of the term). If not, you will have to wait until it is the day of or after your assigned enrollment date and time to be able to enroll.
- As a senior guest auditor, did you complete the online permission to enroll form? If not, go to the senior guest auditor website to complete the online permission to enroll form ASAP. After you submit the permission request form, check your wisc.edu email for updates. Go back into Course Search & Enroll and remove the courses you tried to enroll in from your cart. Once you receive permission to enroll (via email), review these instructions BEFORE you add the courses back into your cart and enroll.
- Has your permission to enroll expired? Check your permission email confirmation for the expiration date. If your permission has expired, please contact our office for enrollment assistance at 608-263-6960 or seniorauditor@dcs.wisc.edu.
- Did you enroll using the class number listed in your permission to audit email? If not, remove the course from your cart and go through the enrollment steps again.
- Did you try to enroll in LEC (Lecture) or DIS (discussion) section? If so, remove the course from your cart, log out of Course Search & Enroll and open a different browser, log back in, and go through the enrollment steps again, this time using the information in your permission email.
- If you have tried troubleshooting and you still cannot enroll in the course, try clearing your cache and cookies out of your web browser.
7. Can I still enroll if I have permission and the course is wait listed or closed?
- Yes, even if the class states it is closed or wait-listed, you can still enroll if you were given permission. Your enrollment permission overrides this, and you will be able to complete the enrollment process.
8. Why is the class I want to audit not showing up when I search for it under "Course Search" on the Course Search & Enroll page?
- When searching for classes on the "Course Search," make sure to select "Open," "Wait listed" and "Closed." Are you using Chrome or Firefox web browser? These two browsers work best with Course Search & Enroll.
9. Should I select the option to be wait listed for the course when enrolling?
- Your enrollment permission overrides a wait list or if the course is closed. You do NOT need to select ‘Wait list me if the course is full when I enroll.'
10. Why did I receive permission to enroll in the discussion and not the lecture?
- Even though you do not attend the discussion section, the enrollment system is set up that the enrollment for the lecture will only go through if a discussion is selected. This is in place so that credit-seeking students do not forget to enroll in the lecture and discussion.
11. What if my permission to enroll expired?
- Contact our office at 608-263-6960 or email seniorauditor@dcs.wisc.edu so that we can assist you with enrolling.
