The meeting was called to order at 2:00 p.m.
The minutes of March 21 were approved.
General Reports
Donna Cole, ASEC Vice Chair, reported that Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman informed members of the Academic Staff Representatives Council that a paid parental leave policy will be presented to the Board of Regents for consideration at their meeting next week and that he’s proposing an increase in in-state tuition for next year.
Lesley Fisher, Interim Secretary of the Academic Staff, reminded ASEC that they will be reviewing nominations for the dean of the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) Search and Screen Committee at their next meeting.
Liaison Reports
Donna Cole reported that the SMPH CASI recently increased committee membership.
Guest: Charles Isbell, Provost
Provost Isbell and ASEC had a conversation about short-term and long-term impacts of technology, and how we’re preparing people to be critical consumers of the digital world.
One of goals of the RISE Initiative is to create new educational opportunities. Each initiative will have an implementation and coordination team, which will consider needs related to space, infrastructure, teaching, learning, and mentoring. Anyone can submit an idea for a future RISE initiative on the RISE website.
Business
- April Assembly Agenda – for vote
Motion to approve the April Assembly Agenda (Stoddard Cameron). Seconded. Approved.
- Topics for Guests
OHR: update on parental leave policy; transparency around compensation analyses and CCF; salary compression related to graduate stipend rates; guidance on degree requirements for job postings
Ombuds: data related to issue type and protected identities
Guest: Cynthia Czajkowski, Interim Vice Chancellor for Research
Interim Vice Chancellor Czajkowski provided an update on administrative searches. Vice chancellor for research finalists visited campus and a hiring announcement is expected in the coming weeks. Director searches are in progress for the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center, Wisconsin Ice Cube Particle Astrophysics Center, and UW-Madison Arboretum.
The appropriations bills recently signed by President Biden earmarked approximately $56 million for UW-Madison research projects.
Kim Moreland is retiring as director of Research and Sponsored Programs and Mark Sweet will serve as interim director. New staff positions have been approved for the unit and they are actively recruiting for existing vacancies.
Badger IP Industry Advantage is a new program that aims to streamline the process of engaging with industry.
