Memorial Resolution Of The Academic Staff Assembly of the University Of Wisconsin-Madison 
On the Death of Paul W. Lyne Senior Research Specialist-Waisman Center

Paul Lyne, age 55, died on Sunday, October 3, 2010 after a 6-month battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Paul was born in Neillsville, Wisconsin. His family moved to Madison in 1968. He graduated from Memorial High School where he met his future wife, Mary Czynszak. He attended University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in Botany and Art. He worked as a chemist at the State Laboratory of Hygiene until 1988. He then joined the Biochemical Genetics Program at the Waisman Center as a senior research specialist where he established the first clinical laboratory service in Wisconsin to detect abnormal organic acids in patients. This proved to be a very valuable service for diagnosing rare metabolic disorders that manifest mostly in neonates and children. Not infrequently, he would come in at all hours of the day, weekends and holidays to run the test to enable a rapid diagnosis so that the appropriate treatment could be initiated to save a child’s life. This pioneering work also led to the establishment of a program for the diagnosis of organic acidurias at the Wisconsin Newborn Screening Laboratory, State Laboratory of Hygiene. He was a bright and insightful scientist and a critical reader of the medical literature; often bringing the latest findings to attention of the other staff. He retired from the Waisman Center in April of 2009.

Paul and Mary would have celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary in October of this year. Paul and Mary were always gracious hosts at their home in Madison. They have a wonderful screened porch and “porch parties” at their home were always special events on a Friday evening after work. Paul was a great chef using produce from his backyard garden. He was also president of the Culinary History Enthusiasts of Wisconsin (CHEW).

Paul is survived by his wife, Mary; step-mother, Jane Lyne of Bernalillo, New Mexico; his sisters and brothers Mary “Kathy” (Dana) Burns of Eau Claire, Anthony (Mary Gunderson) Lyne of Stone Lake, Laurie Lyne of Eau Claire, William T (Brian Derr) Lyne of Alexandria, Va, and Jesse Lyne of Madison; his sisters-in-law, Anne (Tim) Nagle of Annapolis, Md. and Victoria Conlin of Stoughton; his nieces and nephews, Laurie Stalheim, David (Julie) Stalheim, Rebecca (Cory) Tennison, Lindsey Lyne, Kevin (Megan) Conlin, Karina Conlin and Allison Nagle; and his great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Paul’s kindness and gentle manner will be missed by his colleagues at the Waisman Center, his family and friends.
