Salesforce provides us with the ability to group our campaigns using a hierarchy tree. Salesforce comes with up to five layers of hierarchy, but we usually use just two.

As a recruiter you will use a Recruitment Trip as a parent campaign and group child campaigns - your individual Recruitment Initiated and Recruitment Invited campaigns - within the Recruitment Trip. This allows you to see all recruitment events you’ll do in a certain trip or time period. 

There are times when you may use a third layer of hierarchy - a grandparent campaign. Your decision to use a grandparent campaign is one that should be made between you and your recruitment lead. Factors that will influence your decision include:

• Do you need the flexibility to adjust a parent campaign's dates or perhaps to delete an entire parent campaign, without eliminating the overall trip? If so use a grandparent campaign.
• Will you be submitting one expense report for multiple parent campaigns? If so, you may want to use a grandparent campaign, although if you can easily divide the expenses among multiple parent campaigns, a grandparent campaign is not technically necessary.

Campaign Hierarchy Examples

Technically speaking, each parent- level Recruitment Trip campaign below could stand alone as the parent to its connected child campaigns. However, our examples all include a third level to illustrate the use of the grandfather-level Recruitment Trip campaigns.  

Example One

Adam is traveling to Brazil and Panama. He will not return home between countries. However, he will have different hotels, visa costs, etc. for each country. Thus, he builds the following campaign structure:

Luis is visiting schools in the greater Washington, DC area most of the week, doing four day trips. Since he returns home each evening he will create a grandparent campaign for the week, then one parent campaign for each day. His campaign structure is:

Thomas is headed up north to recruit future Badgers. In the future he would like to be able to see the entirety of his fall recruitment in one campaign and thus he has decided to use the grandparent-parent-child recruitment structure.
