DoIT Departmental Support - Connecting to a Shared Drive (Windows and Mac OS)

This document details how to connect to a shared folder or drive.

Note: If you are connecting from a campus wireless or home network, you must first connect to WiscVPN before following the steps below:  

  1. Open File Explorer and select "This PC".
  2. Click the "Map Network Drive" button in the ribbon menu at the top, then select "Map Network Drive" (under the Computer tab).
  3. Enter the path to the shared printer.
  4. Ensure that the "Reconnect at Logon" box is checked.
  5. Click "Connect using a different user name".
  6. Enter the necessary user credentials.
  7. The new printer will be listed under "This PC".
  8. Click "OK" and "Finish".

    Mapping Network Drives on macOS

    Note: If you are connecting from a campus wireless or home network, you must first connect to WiscVPN before following the steps below:  
    1. Open Finder.
    2. Click "Go" and then "Connect to Server".
    3. Enter the server address for the network printer, and then click "Connect".
    4. If the server address is given in Windows format, modify it as follows: replace the two backslashes at the beginning with "smb://" and replace the remaining backslashes with forward slashes. (e.g. //server.ad.wisc.edu/shared becomes smb://server.ad.wisc.edu/shared)
    5. When prompted, enter the appropriate username and password.
    6. If you are using your NetID, enter "<netid>@wisc.edu" as the username.
    7. Click "Connect".
