The SHIP Health Plan is a university-sponsored, comprehensive, and affordable health plan that provides coverage for the services that UHS does not provide.

By enrolling in Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), you'll supplement the health services of UHS with major medical insurance coverage, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. UHS is not open evenings and weekends and does not provide hospitalization, emergency room care, and care of complex health problems, so it is extremely important that you and your partner/family have adequate health insurance.

SHIP is required for all International Students and Scholars unless the qualifying criteria on the Waiver Application (PDF) are satisfied. No individual insurance plan will qualify for a waiver.

You are not eligible if you are:

• taking classes as a guest student
• auditing classes
• registered for a study abroad program
• taking courses exclusively at an academic institution other than UW-Madison (even if those credits will later transfer to UW-Madison)

Enrollment periods:

For domestic students: Annual and Fall enrollment is July 15-September 14, while Spring/Summer enrollment is December 15-February 14.
