ASM Elects New Shared Governance Campaign Director, Approves Finalized Internal Budget with Wage Increase

MADISON, WI — On Wednesday, the ASM Student Council elected Kylie Hollenstein as the new Shared Governance Campaign Director for the 28th Session.

Hollenstein, an ASM Intern Program graduate and current ASM Administrative Associate, is eager to dive into her new position. “I am beyond honored for this opportunity and will do everything I can to ensure students are able to make their voice heard on campus,” said Hollenstein.

Shared Governance Chair Reez Bailey was excited to see the role filled and looks forward to working with Hollenstein on future ASM campaigns. “I am very excited to be working with Kylie,” said Bailey. “I know we’re going to hit the ground running and keep up the momentum ASM has been building all year.”

Hollentstein replaces former Shared Governance Campaign Director Emma Cline, who departed at the beginning of the spring semester for a position with UW-Madison’s Social Justice Education program.

Also on Wednesday, Student Council approved the final draft of ASM’s Fiscal Year 2023 Internal Budget. The new budget includes wage increases for paid student positions to reflect the Wage Policy Bylaw Edits legislation, which the Student Council approved for the second and final time on Wednesday.

Student Council also considered a “Break Free From Plastics” resolution on Wednesday. The legislation, which was introduced by ASM Sustainability Chair Ashley Cheung in partnership with WISPIRG Campus Action, calls on UW-Madison to establish a procurement policy that provides the framework for the long-term elimination of single-use disposable plastics on campus. Student Council will vote on the resolution at its next meeting.

Additionally, during Wednesday’s meeting, ASM Vice Chair Lennox Owino announced that the Center for the First-Year Experience (CYFE) approved a new class selection format for Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) that greatly eases incoming international students’ ability to pick classes and work with academic advisors.

The announcement was personal for Owino, who pursued a similar initiative in a prior campaign. “ASM welcomes the change by the CYFE on the new SOAR format,” said Owino, commenting on the development. “This will go a long way in seeing previously affected students have equal access to classes during the freshmen SOAR orientation. We want to thank all the stakeholders involved in the process.”

Finally, on Wednesday, Student Council approved a Fiscal Year 2022 Internal Budget alteration and presented a summary of approved legislation from the Association of Big Ten Students 2022 Winter Conference, which ASM hosted at the Pyle Center from Jan. 28-30.

The next Student Council meeting will be on Wednesday, February 23. The location and format are to be determined due to Madison-area COVID-19 case count concerns.
