ASM Condemns the Invasion of Ukraine
MADISON, WI — On Wednesday, the ASM Student Council unanimously approved a resolution condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and supporting a democratic, peaceful solution to the conflict.
The resolution immediately sent Student Council into three minutes of silence to honor the innocent lives lost during the invasion and the Russian protesters who faced repression for promoting peace and dignity. In addition, the resolution urged UW-Madison to assist impacted students and asked campus, state, and federal officials to protect international students with political beliefs different from their home nation’s government, especially if that regime is authoritarian.
“I proposed this resolution to honor the brave Ukrainian people, assist Ukrainian students on campus, and advance the rights of international students,” Representative Steven Shi said. “We shall have a moment of silence, we shall host a vigil, but besides these gestures, if we wish to uphold the values of this institution, we must also urge the university administration and legislators to provide financial and emotional support for all those who are impacted by this unjust war.”
The resolution also requires ASM to organize a vigil for peace and unity that honors those impacted by the unjust invasion of Ukraine. Though a date has yet to be determined, the vigil must be held on Library Mall on or before Wednesday, March 30.
Also on Wednesday, Student Council moved one step closer to approving ASM Bylaws changes that would modernize Student Judiciary language and change the order of election for new ASM leaders. Both pieces of legislation passed for the first time on Wednesday but must receive a second two-thirds majority vote at the next Student Council meeting before being adopted.
The next Student Council meeting will be on Wednesday, March 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hearing Room on the 4th Floor of the Student Activity Center at 333 East Campus Mall.
