Deliberation Continues on UW System-Wide Student Government
MADISON, WI — On Wednesday, June 8th 2022, the Associated Students of Madison held its second meeting of the summer schedule. On the agenda once again was the ratification of the University of Wisconsin System Student Government Association (UWS SGA) Constitution. The UWS SGA Constitution was recently introduced to 29th Session Student Council representatives at the May 25th meeting.
Deliberation continued over the UWS SGA Constitution, with primary sponsor Chair MGR Govindarajan expressing his support once again for the document. Govindarajan, who serves as the chair for the ASM Legislative Affairs Committee, also reminded the body that discussion of the UWS SGA Constitution may continue until regular fall semester Student Council meetings resume. Ultimately, the issue of ratification was tabled by the Student Council until an upcoming meeting in the Fall 2022 semester.
The Student Council also discussed the proposed bylaw amendments to Section 8 of the ASM Constitution. The originally proposed bylaw amendments would edit various clauses relating to the UWS SGA; including protocols for electing representatives from the University of Wisconsin-Madison student body.
After discussion commenced on this item, a temporary ad hoc committee was formed by Chair Govindarajan to redraft the existing Section 8 bylaws within the ASM Constitution, utilizing input from committee. The committee hopes to present their final draft of Section 8 by the second fall Student Council meeting on September 28th. Many Student Council representatives volunteered to serve on the committee, which will also be headed by Chair Govindarajan. The ad hoc committee is open to the student body. The next summer Student Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 13 2022 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom.
