Student Council debates and approves budgets for ASM branches, General Student Services Fund

MADISON, Wis. — At its final meeting of the semester last Wednesday, Student Council reviewed and approved budgets for ASM branches and the General Student Services Fund (GSSF).

Most budgets were approved with little discussion and few amendments, however the Student Judiciary budget was debated rigorously following open forum statements from Chief Justice Chloe Sieman and Vice Chief Justice Cameron Sorenson.

They commented on budget cuts proposed by the Student Services Finance Committee (SSFC), and said that their operations would be affected. The cuts were made following a review of historical actual funding.

Following debate, Student Council voted to restore some funding in the budget for the Student Judiciary. The new amounts are in between what the SSFC proposed and what the Student Judiciary originally requested, according to SSFC Vice Chair Brock Titus.

Following the changes made to the Student Judiciary’s budget, Student Council considered other budgets for the Student Services Finance Committee, Student Activity Center Governing Board and the ASM internal budget. Amendments were made to the SSFC budget and ASM internal budget, according to the meeting notes.

The General Student Services Fund allocables were also discussed and approved. It funds 18 different Registered Student Organizations for a total of $1.1 million in FY27, according to the document.

The budgets will now head to the Chancellor.

The meeting concluded with reports and shared governance appointments. Full meeting notes can be viewed here. The meeting notes have not yet been formally approved, so changes could still be made.

The next Student Council meeting will be held on Jan. 21 at 6:30 p.m.
