33rd session of Student Council holds first meeting, elects two new leadership positions
MADISON, Wis. — New representatives were sworn into Student Council Friday night, marking the start of a new session, and new leadership was elected, including the chair and internal affairs chair.
Representatives heard open forum participants announce their candidacies for leadership positions along with endorsements and some statements of opposition. The forum also included debate over whether non-students should be allowed to speak, which prompted voting procedure.
Towards the conclusion of the meeting, a motion was made to vote for the position of chair by secret ballot. Representatives used paper slips to cast their votes, and Chair Haia Al Zein won the position after two rounds of voting.
Representatives then filled seats for the Internal Affairs Committee by appointing themselves, and Pranav Venkit was selected as Internal Affairs Chair after running unopposed.
Shortly after, because the Student Activity Center was slated to close at 8:00 p.m., the meeting was adjourned to comply with open meetings law.
Meeting notes can be viewed here and remain subject to approval and revision.
Additional leadership positions will be elected at the second meeting of the 33rd session on April 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Activity Center Hearing Room on the fourth floor. The agenda is available here.
