Biochemistry IT Help Desk
The Biochemistry IT Help Desk serves as the primary point of contact for all IT needs within the department, dedicated to addressing the specialized requirements of Biochemistry faculty, staff, and students. With a focus on prompt, tailored support, the Biochemistry IT Department is readily available to assist, offering a level of accessibility and responsiveness beyond that of the central University IT services.
The Biochemistry IT Help Desk is available weekdays, 8:00AM to 4:30PM.

Division of Information Technology (DoIT) Help Desk
The Division of Information Technology (DoIT) is the central IT department of UW-Madison. This group manages University-wide licensing (i.e. Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Zoom, etc.), accounts (ie. NetID, DUO MFA, etc.), and infrastructure (i.e. UWNet). The DoIT Help Desk should be your secondary IT support resource.
For information on the DoIT Help Desk's hours of operation and contact information, see Get Help from DoIT. The DoIT Help Desk is available via phone, chat, email, and in-person.
Biochemistry IT KnowledgeBase
The Biochemistry IT KnowledgeBase (kb.wisc.edu/biochem/it) has self-service, department-specific information about IT topics including connecting to VPN, software licensing and installation, connecting to ResearchDrive, and more. Check out the front page to see our IT staff photos and bios!
DoIT KnowledgeBase
The DoIT KB (kb.wisc.edu) is an extensive library of documentation for all University-provided IT services including NetID, Microsoft 365 (i.e. email, calendar, apps), internet (i.e. UWNet, Eduroam), Google Workspace, Canvas, Zoom, and much more.
UW-Madison Accounts
UW-Madison NetID
Your UW-Madison NetID is your primary account for all things related to the University. Activate your NetID at mynetid.wisc.edu/activate. You will need your CampusID or an activation key from Biochemistry HR. For help finding your CampusID, see Help Desk - I need my Campus ID/Wiscard number. Remember to set a recovery email using a personal email address (i.e. Gmail, Hotmail, etc.) and set your recovery questions in case you need to recover your NetID account!
If you are having trouble activating your NetID or need help recovering your NetID credentials, call the DoIT Help Desk at (608) 264-4357 (choose option 1). You will need to provide your CampusID for identity verification.
Set Your Recovery Email and Recovery Questions
Your recovery email and recovery questions are required to recover your NetID or password. If you did not set your recovery email and recovery questions when you activated your NetID, log in to mynetid.wisc.edu/modify to set them now.
Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
To increase the security of NetID accounts, Duo Multi-Factor Authentication is required for all faculty, staff, and students. If you have not already activated your Duo account, log in with your NetID at mfa.wisc.edu to enroll now.
For more information on Duo MFA enrollment, see MFA-Duo - How to Enroll for MFA Duo for your NetID Login Account.
For more information about multi-factor authentication and why it is required, see MFA-Duo - What is Duo Multi-factor Authentication?.
If you are having problems enrolling in Duo MFA or need help recovering your account, call the DoIT Help Desk at (608) 264-4357 (choose option 1). You will need to provide your CampusID for identity verification.
UW-Madison Software & Services
Licensing for many of these services should be automatically activated when you activate your NetID. If you are having trouble with these services, log in with your NetID to mynetid.wisc.edu/modify and click the red Activate Services Button. It may take up to 24 hours for some services to become available to your account.
Microsoft 365

Some of the additional software available to faculty on the CSL includes ChemDraw, PyMOL, SPSS, and more.
Hardware Purchasing and Configuration
Please coordinate with Biochemistry IT for all IT purchases. Create a Job Board ticket to request a quote.
Biochemistry Departmental Computer
Biochemistry IT staff will work with incoming faculty to purchase a departmental computer and configure it to suit your needs. Faculty can choose their preferred operating system (macOS or Windows), and IT staff will assist with choosing appropriate hardware specifications depending on the type of data and software you will be working with. Most faculty opt to use a laptop for greater mobility.
If IT has not already reached out to you, please open a Job Board ticket to begin the purchasing process.
Once a device has been purchased, IT will assist with...
- Account configuration
- Data transfers (i.e. from another computer or a hard drive)
- Software installations and licensing
Additional Hardware
Computer Monitor: An additional external monitor is recommended with laptops to provide a more comfortable office setup. A USB-C hub monitor will act as a desktop workstation, allowing you to connect the monitor, power, ethernet, a keyboard, a mouse, an external hard drive, and any other peripherals to your laptop with a single USB-C cable. Faculty typically choose a model similar to this HP Z34c ultra-wide monitor.
External Hard Drive: An external hard drive (~ 2TB) is recommended for Time Machine backups on Apple computers.
Keyboard and Mouse: An external keyboard and mouse are recommended for faculty office computer setups.
Webcam: A high quality external webcam is recommended for online meetings. You may prefer to use the built-in laptop webcam instead.
Headset: A headset with a microphone can be used for remote meetings.
Lab Printers
Biochemistry IT generally recommends each lab has at least one shared printer. For printer purchasing guidelines and recommendations, see Biochemistry Printer Purchasing Guidelines.
Secure Research Data Storage
UW-Madison DoIT provides 25TB of free research data storage for PIs with a service called ResearchDrive. The Biochemistry Department will then fund additional storage as needed, up to a total of $5,000 per year for each PI. For the current policy, see Policy - PI/Lab ResearchDrive File Storage. ResearchDrive data can be accessed by authorized users from anywhere on any device that is connected to the Biochemistry VPN.
ResearchDrive data is backed up daily and can be recovered quickly if needed. For more information about RDrive backups, see ResearchDrive - Restoring Files or Folders from Snapshots.
Due of its increased security and availability, Biochemistry IT strongly recommends to store research data only on the lab's RDrive rather than directly on computers or external storage devices.
Biochemistry IT will request the creation of and configure ResearchDrive for each PI and provide technical support.
Instructions for connecting to ResearchDrive can be found here: ResearchDrive - Mounting a Drive
Biochemistry Software and Licensing
Many applications are available to install on Biochemistry-owned devices via the Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub application. Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub allows users to install pre-approved software without requiring administrator approval.
The Biochemistry Department offers additional software licenses for users in the department for applications including GraphPad PRISM, DNASTAR Lasergene, Endnote, and SBGrid. For the current list of software available to the Biochemistry Department, see Software Available to the Biochemistry Department.
