VPN - Connecting to the Biochemistry VPN

This document explains how to set up and connect to the Biochemistry VPN.

Remotely Connecting to the Biochemistry Network

Some services, including ResearchDrive, Shared Drive, and license servers require a connection to the Biochemistry network. Users in the UW-Madison Biochemistry Department can use the Biochem VPN (biochem.vpn.wisc.edu) using the instructions below.

Note: Many UW-Madison services, including Cisco VoIP, can be accessed from the UW-Madison VPN (uwmadison.vpn.wisc.edu). (See WiscVPN - How to Install, Connect, Uninstall, and Disconnect WiscVPN Palo Alto GlobalProtect)

   

MacOS

Download/Install Global Protect

  1. If you are connecting with a departmental machine, GlobalProtect is likely already installed on your device. If it is not installed, please contact Biochem IT: Get Help from Biochemistry IT!
  2. For personal machines running MacOS...
    1. Log in to the Biochemistry VPN website with your UW-Madison NetID and password
    2. Download the Mac 32/64 bit GlobalProtect agent
    3. Open the downloaded file and follow the installation instructions

Connect to Biochem VPN

  1. Open Global Protect (it will likely be open in your menu bar in the top right)
  2. Enter the Biochem VPN portal address...
    • If you have never connected before, enter biochem.vpn.wisc.edu and click Connect
    • If you have connected to another UW-Madison VPN before, click the three bars in the top left and open the Settings
      Open GP Settings
      1. In the General settings tab, click the Plus to add a new portal address
        Global Protect Settings
      2. Enter biochem.vpn.wisc.edu
      3. Make sure the new portal address was added to the list and close the settings window
  3. Click Connect
  4. Enter your UW-Madison NetID and password when prompted
  5. You should see a screen that says Connected if successful

  6. Disconnect when you are finished

Windows

Download/Install Global Protect

  1. If you are connecting with a departmental machine, GlobalProtect is likely already installed on your device. If it is not installed, please contact Biochem IT: Get Help from Biochemistry IT!
  2. For personal machines running Windows...
    1. Log in to the Biochemistry VPN website with your UW-Madison NetID and password
    2. Download the Windows 32 or 64 bit GlobalProtect agent. (If you are not sure which version you are running, see How to tell if my computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows?.)
    3. Open the downloaded file and follow the installation instructions

Connect to Biochem VPN

  1. Open Global Protect (use Windows search, or look for it in the bottom right corner)
  2. Enter the Portal Address: biochem.vpn.wisc.edu
    Note: If you see a different address, you will need to add the Biochem VPN portal address
  3. Click Connect
  4. Log in with your NetID and password
  5. Disconnect when you are finished

iOS / Android

  1. Dowload the Global Protect app from the App Store
    Global Protect AppGlobal Protect App
  2. Open the Global Protect app
  3. Enter the Portal Address: biochem.vpn.wisc.edu
  4. Click Connect
  5. Follow prompts to allow adding a new VPN configuration
  6. Log in with your NetID and password
  7. Disconnect when you are finished

Linux

Install

  1. Download the Global Protect Client from the UW-Madison list of VPN clients
  2. Follow Palo Alto's Linux installation instructions

Connecting

  1. Use the following command to connect:
    globalprotect connect --portal biochem.vpn.wisc.edu
  2. Log in with your NetID and password
  3. View the status of your connection with the following command:
    globalprotect show --status
  4. View details of your connection with the following command:
    globalprotect show --details
  5. Disconnect with the following command:
    globalprotect disconnect

Uninstall

  1. Follow Palo Alto's Linux uninstall instructions
