Botany Office Color Printer

Adding This Printer to Windows 7

  • Click on the Start Menu.
  • Right-click on Computer and select "Properties".
  • Take note of the System type on the right-hand side of the "View basic information about your computer" window. You either have a 32-bit or a 64-bit Operating System.
  • Download the appropriate drivers from HP's website. The drivers you want are the Vista drivers since this printer is not supported under Windows 7. If you have a 32-bit operating system (see above for a reminder), choose Windows Vista. If you have a 64-bit operating system, choose Vista (64-bit).
  • Click on the Download button to start the download.
  • When prompted, choose "Save File" to download the drivers.
  • Find the downloaded file and open it.
  • When the Security Warning dialog box appears, choose to Run the file.
  • WinZip will then appear. Click on the Unzip button.
  • Click OK to dismiss the dialog box informing you that 32 files were unzipped successfully.
  • Close Winzip.
  • From the Start Menu, choose Devices and Printers.
  • Click on "Add a Printer" (it's near the top of the window)
  • Click on "Add a network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer"
  • Click on "The printer I want isn't listed" (you don't have to wait for the search process to timeout before clicking that button).
  • Select "Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname"
  • Make the Device type "TCP/IP Device".
  • Enter hp3500-rm132a.botany.wisc.edu in the Hostname or IP address box.
  • Take the default for Port Name
  • Uncheck "Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use".
  • Click on Next.
  • Choose "Have Disk..." in the Install printer driver window.
  • In the Install From Disk windows, click on Browse.
  • Navigate to "C:\HP CLJ3500". You will see an hpc3500e file in the window when you're there. Click on the Open button.
  • Back in the "Install Printer Driver" box, you should now see HP Color LaserJet 3500. Click on Next.
  • Either keep the default printer name or enter an arbitrary new one. Click on Next.
  • Wait while Windows installs the printer.
  • Uncheck "Set as the default printer".
  • Click on the "Print a test page" button if you want to try out your printer.
  • Click Next/Finish.

Adding This Printer to Windows XP

  • Download and install the appropriate driver from HP's website.
  • Click on the Start Menu and choose Printers And Faxes.
  • Click "Add Printer".
  • Click Next.
  • Check "Local Printer attached to this computer".
  • Uncheck "Automatically detect my Plug and Play printer".
  • Click Next.
  • Check "Create a new port".
  • Select "Standard TCP/IP port" (or "HP Jetdirect TCP/IP port", if available).
  • Click Next.
  • Click Next on the "Welcome to the Add Standard TCP/IP..." dialog box
  • Enter hp3500-rm132a.botany.wisc.edu in the "Printer Name or IP Address" box.
  • Click Next.
  • Click Finish.
  • In the "Install Printer Software" box, highlight "HP" in the left hand column and then "HP Color LaserJet 3500" in the right hand column (If you don't see that option in the right-hand column, choose the driver that looks closest to "HP Color LaserJet 3500".
  • Click Next.
  • Give the printer a useful name like hp3500-rm132a or Botany Color Printer.
  • Decide to make this printer the default printer (or not).
  • Click Next.
  • Print a test page.
  • Click Finish.
  • Click OK.
  • Visit the printer to verify it works.

Adding this printer to Mac OS X (pre-10.7)

  • Open "System Preferences"
  • Click on "Printers and Faxes"
  • Click on "Setup Printers"
  • In the "Printer Setup Utility" box, click on "Add" or "+" button
  • On the "Printer List" dialog box, select "IP Printing" form the drop-down-selection menu.
  • In "Printer Type", choose "Socket/HP Jet Direct"
  • In "Printer Address", type: hp3500-rm132a.botany.wisc.edu
  • In "Printer Model", select "HP"
  • In "Queue Name", type a useful name like hp3500-rm132a or Botany Color Printer
  • In the "Model Name" list, highlight "HP Color Laserjet 3500 Series"
  • Click the "Add" button
  • Verify that printing works.

Adding This Printer to Mac OS X (10.7 - Lion)

  1. Open "System Preferences".
  2. Click on "Printers & Scan".
  3. In the "Printer & Scan" box, click on "Add" or "+" button.
  4. On the "Add Printer" dialog box, click on the "IP" icon at the top of the window.
  5. In "Printer Type", choose "HP Jet Direct - Socket".
  6. In "Address", type hp3500-rm132a.botany.wisc.edu.
  7. Leave "Queue" blank.
  8. In "Name", type an arbitrary but useful name like HP3500 - Room 132a.
  9. "Location" is another arbitrary string. You can leave it blank or fill it in with something like "Birge Hall - Room 132a"
  10. In the "Print Using" list, highlight "HP LaserJet 3500 Series".
  11. Click the "Add" button.
  12. Verify that printing works.
