HP 4300 in Room 132a
Adding This Printer to Windows 7
- Click on the Start Menu.
- Select Control Panel.
- Open Devices and Printers.
- Click the Add a printer button near the top of the window.
- Click on Add a network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer.
- Click on "The printer I want wasn't listed" button.
- Click "Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname" and then click Next.
- Complete the next page using the information below:
- Select TCP/IP for Device type.
- For Hostname or IP address use: hp4300-rm132a.botany.wisc.edu
- Port name is arbitrary. You can leave it as the default or change it to whatever you want.
- Make sure that "Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use" is checked.
- Click on the Next button.
- Printer Name is arbitrary. Leave it as the default or change it to whatever you want.
- Click on Next.
- You can then choose to Print a Testpage or click Finish.
Adding This Printer to Windows XP
- Visit Hewlett Packard's website and download the relevant driver.
- Unzip the drivers (if your web browser didn't do it automatically for you). Take note of where the unzipped driver ends up as you'll need that information later.
- Click on the Start menu.
- Then select, Printers And Faxes.
- Click "Add Printer".
- Click Next.
- Check "Local Printer attached to this computer".
- Uncheck "Automatically detect my Plug and Play printer".
- Click Next.
- Check "Create a new port".
- Select "Standard TCP/IP port" (or "HP Jetdirect TCP/IP port", if available).
- Click Next.
- Click Next on the "Welcome to the Add Standard TCP/IP..." dialog box.
- Enter hp4300-rm132a.botany.wisc.edu in the "Printer Name or IP Address" box.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish.
- In the "Install Printer Software" box, click on the "Have Disk" button.
- Click on the Browse button.
- Navigate to the location you noted in step two where the downloaded driver can be found. You're looking for a folder named "HP LJ4300 PostScript Driver". Select that folder and hit Open. Then click Open again.
- Click OK to close the "Have Disk" driver dialog box.
- The "HP LaserJet 4300 PS" driver should now be visible in the Add Printer Wizard window. Click Next.
- Give the printer an arbitrary but useful name like HP4300 - Room 132a.
- Decide to make this printer the default printer (or not).
- Click Next.
- Print a test page.
- Click Finish.
- Click OK.
- Visit the printer to verify it works.
Adding This Printer to Mac OS X (pre-10.7)
- Open "System Preferences".
- Click on "Printers and Faxes".
- Click on "Setup Printers".
- In the "Printer Setup Utility" box, click on "Add" or "+" button.
- On the "Printer List" dialog box, select "IP Printing" form the drop-down-selection menu.
- In "Printer Type", choose "Socket/HP Jet Direct".
- In "Printer Address", type hp4300-rm132a.botany.wisc.edu.
- In "Printer Model", select the appropriate model number (e.g. "LaserJet 4300").
- In "Queue Name", type an arbitrary but useful name like HP4300 - Room 132a.
- In the "Model Name" list, highlight "HP LaserJet 4300 Series".
- Click the "Add" button.
- Verify that printing works.
Adding This Printer to Mac OS X (10.7 - Lion)
- Open "System Preferences".
- Click on "Printers & Scan".
- In the "Printer & Scan" box, click on "Add" or "+" button.
- On the "Add Printer" dialog box, click on the "IP" icon at the top of the window.
- In "Printer Type", choose "HP Jet Direct - Socket".
- In "Address", type hp4300-rm132a.botany.wisc.edu.
- Leave "Queue" blank.
- In "Name", type an arbitrary but useful name like HP4300 - Room 132a.
- "Location" is another arbitrary string. You can leave it blank or fill it in with something like "Birge Hall - Room 132a"
- In the "Print Using" list, highlight "HP LaserJet 4300 Series".
- Click the "Add" button.
- Verify that printing works.
