Maeda Lab HP LaserJet M551

Adding This Printer to Windows 7

  1. Download and install the appropriate driver for your operating system from HP's Website
  2. Click on the Start Menu.
  3. Open Devices and Printers.
  4. Click the Add a printer button near the top of the window.
  5. Click on Add a network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer.
  6. Click on "The printer I want wasn't listed" button.
  7. Click "Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname" and then click Next.
  8. Complete the next page using the information below:
    • Select TCP/IP for Device type.
    • For Hostname or IP address use: maeda-hp-m551dn.botany.wisc.edu
    • Port name is arbitrary. You can leave it as the default or change it to whatever you want.
  9. Click on the Next button.
  10. Click on the Have Disk button.
  11. Click on the Browse button.
  12. Browse for the print driver you installed earlier. It might be in a folder named HP_LaserJet_Enterprise_500_color_M551 at the root of the C:\ drive.
  13. Click on the Open button to dismiss the browsing dialog box.
  14. Click on the OK button to dismiss the Have Disk dialog box.
  15. You may be presented with one to three appropriate drivers for your device. Click on the PCL6 or PS (PostScript) driver.
  16. Click on Next.
  17. Printer Name is arbitrary. Leave it as the default or change it to whatever you want.
  18. Click on Next.
  19. You can then choose to Print a Testpage or click Finish.

Adding This Printer to Windows XP

  1. Download and install the appropriate driver for your operating system from HP's Website
  2. Click on the Start menu.
  3. Then select, Printers And Faxes.
  4. Click "Add Printer".
  5. Click Next.
  6. Check "Local Printer attached to this computer".
  7. Uncheck "Automatically detect my Plug and Play printer".
  8. Click Next.
  9. Check "Create a new port".
  10. Select "Standard TCP/IP port" (or "HP Jetdirect TCP/IP port", if available).
  11. Click Next.
  12. Click Next on the "Welcome to the Add Standard TCP/IP..." dialog box.
  13. Enter maeda-hp-m551dn.botany.wisc.edu in the "Printer Name or IP Address" box.
  14. Click Next.
  15. Click Finish.
  16. Click on the Have Disk button.
  17. Click on the Browse button.
  18. Browse for the print driver you installed earlier. It might be in a folder named HP_LaserJet_Enterprise_500_color_M551 at the root of the C:\ drive.
  19. Click on the Open button to dismiss the browsing dialog box.
  20. Click on the OK button to dismiss the Have Disk dialog box.
  21. You may be presented with one to three appropriate drivers for your device. Click on the PCL6 or PS (PostScript) driver.
  22. Click Next.
  23. Give the printer an arbitrary but useful name like Maeda Lab M551.
  24. Decide to make this printer the default printer (or not).
  25. Click Next.
  26. Print a test page.
  27. Click Finish.
  28. Click OK.
  29. Visit the printer to verify it works.

Adding This Printer to Mac OS X (pre-10.7)

  1. Open "System Preferences".
  2. Click on "Printers and Faxes".
  3. Click on "Setup Printers".
  4. In the "Printer Setup Utility" box, click on "Add" or "+" button.
  5. On the "Printer List" dialog box, select "IP Printing" form the drop-down-selection menu.
  6. In "Printer Type", choose "Socket/HP Jet Direct".
  7. In "Printer Address", type maeda-hp-m551dn.botany.wisc.edu.
  8. In "Printer Model", select "HP".
  9. In "Queue Name", type an arbitrary but useful name like LaserJet M551.
  10. In the "Model Name" list, highlight "LaserJet M551".
  11. Click the "Add" button.
  12. Verify that printing works.

Adding This Printer to Mac OS X (10.7 - Lion)

  1. Open "System Preferences".
  2. Click on "Printers & Scan".
  3. In the "Printer & Scan" box, click on "Add" or "+" button.
  4. On the "Add Printer" dialog box, click on the "IP" icon at the top of the window.
  5. In "Printer Type", choose "HP Jet Direct - Socket".
  6. In "Address", type maeda-hp-m551dn.botany.wisc.edu.
  7. Leave "Queue" blank.
  8. In "Name", type an arbitrary but useful name like LaserJet M551.
  9. "Location" is another arbitrary string. You can leave it blank or fill it in with something like "Maeda Lab"
  10. In the "Print Using" list, highlight "HP LaserJet 500 color M551".
  11. Click the "Add" button.
  12. Verify that printing works.
