Using AppsAnywhere

How to use the AppsAnywhere client to launch software

Please be aware, due to the way Apps Anywhere virtualizes applications, it can take up to a few minutes for applications to launch.

On login to a CAE Lab computer, the AppsAnywhere client will open using Google Chrome.

If the AppsAnywhere client does not launch on login, you can double click the "AppsAnywhere Portal" icon in the upper left corner of your desktop to open it.

Launching an Application

If this is your first time logging in, you will be prompted with the End User License Agreement.  Read the agreement and click "Accept all EULAs"

EULA

After accepting the EULA, you will be asked if you want to install it or if it is already installed.  Click "I have it already"

I have it already

You will then be prompted about accessing the AppsAnywhere Launcher.  We recommend checking the "Always Allow" checkbox, then clicking "Open AppsAnywhere Launcher"

AppsAnywhere Launcher

From the AppsAnywhere Portal, find the software you wish to launch.  If you have already added any apps to your favorites, clicking on Favorites from the home screen would be the fastest way to find them. If not, you can either search for an app or click on "View All Apps"

AppsAnywhere Dashboard

Once you locate the application you wish to launch, click on it.

This will take you to that application's AppsAnywhere page, containing information on the application, a "Launch" or "Visit Website" button, and an "Add app to favourites" button.

Clicking on "Launch" or "Visit Website" will begin the process of launching the app.  If there are any additional notes you need, such as needing to create an account or needing to have an instructor set up your access, you will be notiifed via a Pop-up.

After closing the Pop-up, 1 of 3 things will happen depending on how the application was set up:

1. Virtualized Apps

If the app is virtualized, you will see a splash screen similar to the one below as the launch process beings.

Launching

This will also cause the Cloudpaging Player to open if it wasn't already, download and cache the needed files for the software, and launch the application

App Running

The app will then open as normal.

2. Locally Installed Apps

If the application is locally installed, it will simply begin launching like any other app.

3. Web based Apps

There are not many web-based applications available via ApssAnywhere.  One of the more common is Minitab, so that will be used as the example here.

As a note, Minitab requires Instructors to set up access for their students.  The pop up message tied to Minitab shows you this.

Minitab

Click "Continue"

A new web browser tab will open, taking you to the software's login page.

Minitab Login

Use the information given to you by your instructor to login and use the software.

Re-launching an app

When you close a virtualized app, it will remain cached on that computer for the rest of the day.  In this case, when you go to launch that app, it will skip most prerequisite steps and launch the software immediately.  The Cloudpaging Player will display apps in this state as "Ready", and the software can either be launched from the Apps Anywhere portal again or by simply selecting that app in the Cloudpaging Player and clicking "Launch"
