Connecting Remotely to CAE Linux Machines from Linux

This document describes how to vnc to a best-tux.cae.wisc.edu Linux lab machine from another Linux machine.

Remote access to the CAE Linux lab machines is currently through a vnc connection. For best practices, this vnc connection is tunneled through ssh, so that your connection is encrypted and secure.

To connect to a linux lab machine remotely from a linux client, we recommend the use of a vncviewer client. Install xtightvncviewer (or other similar vnc client) on your local linux machine:

# sudo apt-get install xtightvncviewer

There are other packages that provide the same VNC access functionalities (e.g., tigerVNC). Refer to the corresponding manual for their uses.

To access with an SSH tunnel automatically setup for you, use the following command (provided by the xtightvncviewer package among others):

# vncviewer -via <caelogin>@best-tux.cae.wisc.edu localhost

See the KB doc on display resolutions for a full set of alternative display ports and default resolutions. To use an alternative display port or resolution, add a suffix to the last argument, "localhost". For example, if you are looking for a 1600x1200 resolution VNC connection:

# vncviewer -via <Your Engineering Login>@best-tux.cae.wisc.edu localhost:76
