Genetics - Adding the Canon Multifunction Office Copier / Printer

This document walks through the process of adding the Canon Multifunction printer / copier in the Reception area of Genetics to both Mac and PC clients. Most PC clients will have the printer added automatically, but if you have a personal computer or non-domain joined PC the printer will have to be added manually.

Mac Installation Instructions

  1. Download the drivers for the printer here: https://uwmadison.box.com/s/mpj5muozdtocowp9bk8f77n5g1irdmp2 

  2. Install the drivers by clicking Next / Yes at the various prompts until it's complete 

  3. Connect to the VPN if you aren't already connected, or otherwise ensure your machine is plugged into a wired ethernet port 

  4. Go to System Preferences > Printers and Scanners, and click the plus button at the bottom 

  5. In the Add Printer dialog, select the middle tab, the globe, and put 144.92.162.94 for the address of the printer, Line Printer Daemon for the protocol, and for Use, select Canon iR-ADV C5860/5870. Once you've set those options, click Add Printer settings page 1

  6. Back in the Printers and Scanners dialog, select the printer from the left hand side and Click Options & Supplies. Under the General tab, rename the printer to have a better friendly name, like Genetics Office Copier:

  7. Under the Options tab, change the Output Options to be Staple Finisher AB1:

  8. Also under Options, change the Paper Source Options to High Capacity Cassette Feeding Unit C1:

  9. Click OK to save the options 

PC Installation Instructions

  1. If your computer isn't connected to the wired network in the building, log onto the Genetics VPN
  2. Download the Windows drivers for the printer here: https://uwmadison.box.com/s/gr0q1j92i7gru1o10r3hoyeaqz1njv19
  3. Extract the archive and run setup.exe within the x64 folder
  4. Press Yes / Next in the installer until you get to the Printer Setup page. Select Custom:

  5. Click Next on the Process page and select 'Auto Select' on the Configuration Profile page:

  6. On the Printer Information page, click Add Port, select 'Standard TCP/IP Port' and click OK to bring up the TCP/IP port wizard:

  7. On the TCP/IP port wizard, click Next and the put '144.92.162.94' for the Printer Name or IP Address. It will auto-fill the port name as well. Click Next and then Finish to close the wizard:

  8. Back on the Printer Information page:
    1. Under the 'Port' dropdown box, select the '144.92.16.94' port you just created
    2. Fill in the printer name with something descriptive like 'Genetics reception printer'. 
    3. Leave the other options at their defaults. Click Next and then 'Start' on the page after to add the printer, and when it completes, click Exit to close the installer:
