Policy on Incomplete Grades
An Incomplete (I) grade (IN for Cr/N courses) is a temporary grade used when a limited amount of work is not completed during a term. Instructors may report an Incomplete for a student who has carried a subject with a passing grade until near the end of the semester and then, because of illness or other unusual and substantiated cause beyond their control, has been unable to take or complete the final examination, or to complete some limited amount of term work. An Incomplete is not given to a student who stays away from a final examination unless the student proves to the instructor that they were prevented from attending as indicated above.
When a CALS undergraduate student receives an incomplete grade, the work for that course must be completed by the last day of class of the next active term the student is enrolled, or it will lapse into a failing grade. Students must work with their instructor to plan how the work will be completed in that timeframe. It is recommended to complete the work as soon as possible to maximize recall of knowledge and ensure attention on current coursework.
Extended Incomplete (EI) is a temporary grade that can be granted by an instructor in limited circumstances, which allows the work to be complete by the last day of class for the second active term the student is enrolled before the grade lapses to an F. This normally allows one year to complete the work. If an instructor grants an Extended Incomplete, a grade change will need to be filed by the instructor and sent to CALS Academic Affairs Dean’s Office. In such cases the grade of Incomplete (I) will be replaced with the grade of Extended Incomplete (EI). Students must work with their instructor to plan how the work will be completed in that timeframe. It is recommended to complete the work as soon as possible to maximize recall of knowledge and ensure attention on current coursework.current coursework.
Permanent Incomplete (PI) is a permanent grade that is only used to replace an Incomplete that 1) was incurred in a student’s last semester in residence and 2) was not removed for five years after being incurred. A Permanent Incomplete grade will not lapse into failing grade and will remain on the student’s transcript.
