AmeriCorps, administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNS), is a national service program with three components:

--AmeriCorps State/National Direct
--AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Conservation Corps)
--AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America)

AmeriCorps programs address the nation's education, public safety, environmental, and human needs and achieve demonstrable results. All AmeriCorps programs have the additional goals of strengthening communities and developing participants. AmeriCorps members are a diverse group of men and women at least 17 yrs old (one exception is the NCCC which requires members to be between 18-24 years old), with a broad range of ages; racial, ethnic and educational backgrounds; physical and mental capabilities; and family income levels. AmeriCorps members may receive a modest living allowance (together with health insurance and childcare for those needing them), and after a full year of service (or its part-time equivalent) a monetary education benefit (voucher straight to school or loan holders). Benefits received depend on program.
