The 800 number handles all initial requests for information. Complete information on obtaining a Social Security card/number is available on the website.

To apply for a Social Security number and card, you need to complete Form SS-5 which is available for download These services are free. You will also need to submit at least two documents as evidence of your age, identity, and U.S. citizenship or lawful alien status.

If you are an F-1 student, you must have completed enrollment as a full-time student and apply for a letter from International Student Services (ISS), 217 Red Gym, see separate record for hours. To be eligible for this letter you must give ISS a letter indicating you have an offer of employment on campus. You must submit the ISS letter with your application to Social Security. If you are a J-1 student or scholar you must submit a letter from your sponsor.

If you're a non-citizen, we must verify your documents with the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS) before we issue a SSN card. We will issue the card within two days of receiving verification from BCIS. Most of the time, we can quickly verify your documents online. If BCIS can’t verify your documents online, it may take several weeks or months to respond to Social Security's request.
