The UW-Madison Odyssey Project provides adults facing economic barriers with a chance to start college. In this introductory humanities course, UW-Madison faculty introduce students to great literary works and help them improve skills in writing and critical thinking. Participants also receive counseling on the process of applying to college, and guidance on financial aid.

Participants in this program are enrolled as "Special Students" at UW-Madison. Students who successfully complete the September-to-May program receive six college credits through the English department.

The tuition for the program is free, due to grant funding and private donations. Books and child care are provided without charge as well.

To be eligible to participate, students must:
  • be at least 18 years old
  • possess a high school diploma or GED/HSED
  • have demonstrated financial need (income at or near the federal poverty level)
  • possess the ability to read challenging books in English
  • make a commitment to attend classes regularly and complete weekly assignments
Applicants may submit an application online or pick one up at the South Madison Public Library at 2232 S. Park St or by calling 608-262-3733.

Classes start in early September at the South Madison Health and Family Center-Harambee, located at 2202 South Park St. in Madison. Classes meet on Wednesday evenings from 6-9 pm through May, with holiday breaks. Additional writing tutorials and advising sessions are scheduled throughout the year.
