CHM IT - VPN Instructions (UW Madison VPN and/or Brain Imaging VPN)

What's a VPN? What's the difference between WiscVPN and BI VPN? What should I use in what circumstance?

What's a VPN?

VPN Stands for Virtual Private Network. There are some digital resources on campus that are "locked down" so that only computers inside the UW-Madison campus can access them. After all, we wouldn't want to give the entire internet access to connect to the servers with our research data, right?

But what if you're working remotely? That's where a VPN comes in. Connecting to the VPN makes your connection look like it's coming from on campus. This allows you to remotely access sites and systems that general internet denizens cannot.

A Tale of Two VPNs: WiscVPN & Brain Imaging VPN

  • WiscVPN is the default UW-Madison VPN service, and should be used for everything related to CHM (connecting to Peach, mounting CHM or Research Drive, etc.).
  • Brain Imaging VPN (BI VPN) is a VPN specifically for connecting to the Brain Imaging servers, and requires a Brain Imaging username and password. Only use the BI VPN if you need to access Brain Imaging stuff!

Need to install the VPN? Here are instructions:

WiscVPN - How to Install, Connect, Uninstall, and Disconnect WiscVPN Palo Alto GlobalProtect

Brain Imaging VPN - How to Install (Note: this REQUIRES Brain Imaging Credentials to access!)

Which VPN do I need to use, and when?

Here's a handy chart:

Using a CHM Desktop Using Peach (CHM's Remote Desktop Server) Using a Laptop
Connecting to Peach (CHM's Remote Desktop Server) No VPN Required! X WiscVPN or BI VPN
Connecting to Research Drive No VPN Required! No VPN Required! WiscVPN
Connecting to Restricted Drive No VPN Required! No VPN Required! Static IP WiscVPN (See Below)
Connecting to CHM's Shared/Home Drive No VPN Required! (Should auto-mount) No VPN Required! (Should auto-mount) WiscVPN
Connecting to Sonora (BI's Remote Desktop Server) No VPN Required! Don't do this. Remote "Double jumping" is bad practice WiscVPN or BI VPN
Connecting to Login.keck.waisman.wisc.edu (BI Linux) No VPN Required! No VPN Required! BI VPN
Connecting to the Brain Imaging Study Drive No VPN Required! No VPN Required! BI VPN
Connecting to JARVIS (Brain Imaging Study Permissions) No VPN Required! No VPN Required! BI VPN

Restricted Drive & Static IP VPN

Since Restricted Drive is more secure, you need to sign up for a Static IP address to access it. Once you have that address, we need to create a case with DoIT to allow you through the firewall. Full instructions are located here: CHM IT - Connecting to Research/Restricted Drive
