ASM Holds First Student Council Meeting of Fall Semester

MADISON, WI — The Associated Students of Madison Student Council commenced their first meeting of the 2022-2023 school year this Wednesday, September 14th at the Student Activities Center.

The Student Council opened the meeting with a Q&A open to all UW-Madison students with Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin. The Chancellor began by introducing herself to the body and giving brief commentary on her first month in office. She called particular attention to the Public History Project’s Sifting & Reckoning exhibit which recently opened at the Chazen Art Museum, as well as acknowledging and addressing recent chalkings targeting student members of various Jewish student organizations. After these comments, ASM Chair Ndemazea Fonkem opened the floor for questions directed to the Chancellor.

Chancellor Mnookin fielded questions relating to The Zoe Bayliss housing cooperative, which lost its original housing this past academic year, as well as additional issues related to affordable student housing in Madison. Representative Steven Levitan asked about the possibility of potential updates to the Wiscard to make it a valid Voter ID in Wisconsin, and Legislative Affairs Chair MGR Govindarajan requested the Chancellors opinion on the upcoming free speech survey being administered this academic year.

The Associated Students of Madison appreciates the Chancellor for taking the time to meet with the ASM Student Council as a body and we hope to continue to have a communicative and open relationship with her and her office throughout the rest of the school year.

Additional business included a proposed legislation to support the UW Health Nurses’ Strike. The Student Council acknowledged that the UW Health Nurses reached an agreement with UW Health on Tuesday through facilitation with Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers. Thus, this legislation was tabled in order to readdress supporting the UW Health Nurses given the recent agreement; and how to specifically best support student UW Health nurses going forward.

ASM also voted on their updated Code of Conduct for the 29th session, which was recently updated for the first time in six years. It is viewable here.

The next Student Council meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28th in the Student Activities Center at 333 East Campus Mall.
