ASM Student Council Calls on University for Public History Project Renewal
MADISON, WI — On Wednesday October 12, the Associated Students of Madison Student Council opened its third fall meeting of the semester. On the agenda included three special orders, with a training on the ASM internal budget immediately following adjournment.
Special Order 29-1012-01 presented a call for the renewal of the Public History Project. Shared Governance Chair Kylie Hollenstein sponsored the legislation, and highlighted the importance of the renewal of the project. The Public History Project recently opened the Sifting & Reckoning exhibit, currently in residence at the Chazen Art Museum. Sifting & Reckoning presents UW-Madison’s history of marginalization and discrimination and the triumphs made by minority students through the university’s history. Since 2019, the Public History Project was tasked with reviewing university archives, with the Sifting & Reckoning exhibit presenting the findings of this review. Currently, the project is slated to finish in mid-summer 2023 if it does not receive renewal of its funding by the university. This special order was passed with unanimous consent.
Next on the agenda was approval of the Nominations Board appointees. The Nominations Board presented their appointees to fill empty positions on the Student Services Finance Committee (SSFC), Student Judiciary, Student Activities Governing Board (SACGB), and Grant Allocations Board. An ongoing internal investigation into violations of the ASM Code of Conduct is currently underway in regards to action taken by the Nominations Board Chair. Debate ensued, and the appointed seats for the SSFC, SACGB, and Grant Allocations Board were approved with a vote of 9 yes, 3 no, and 9 abstentions. The appointed seats for the Student Judiciary passed with a vote of 10 yes, 3 no, and 8 abstentions.
Finally, the Student Council passed approval for an Event Grant presented by Gracie Nelson, Chair of the Grant Allocations Board. The grant was requested by the Registered Student Organization “Foundland Musical.” This was passed with unanimous consent.
The next Student Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 26th at 6:30 p.m. on the 4th floor of 333 East Campus Mall.
