Shared Governance Disability Access Committee Hosts "What's in a Name?" Event
MADISON, WI — The UW Shared Governance Committee on Disability Access & Inclusion (CDAI) will be hosting “What’s in a Name? Van Hise & the History of Eugenics at UW-Madison” on Thursday, February 23rd at Memorial Union and on Zoom. The event will feature speakers Kacie Lucchini Butcher, Director of UW-Madison’s Public History Project, and Nicole C. Nelson, Associate Professor of Medical History & Bioethics.
In tandem with this event on Former President Charles Van Hise, the CDAI is seeking approval for a historical plaque to be placed in the Van Hise Hall lobby that acknowledges Van Hise’s promotion of eugenics. The event and proposed plaque are the first steps the CDAI is taking in response to this history; and the committee continues to seek additional feedback and input from students, faculty, staff, and community members on next steps. They encourage the greater campus community to join them in these efforts.
More information about the event and an RSVP form are available here. Please reach out to cdai@secfac.wisc.edu to contact representatives on the Committee on Disability Access & Inclusion or give feedback on their efforts.
