ASM’s First Student Council Meeting for Fall 2023

MADISON, WI — On Wednesday, September 13th, the Associated Students of Madison held their first student council meeting of the 2023-2024 school year in the Student Activities Center.

The meeting opened with statements from Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Lori Reesor, and Deputy Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion, LaVar Charleston. They discussed their goals for the upcoming school year regarding accessibility on campus and increased resources for marginalized students. After their presentation, ASM Chair Kevin Jacobson opened the floor for questions.

Reesor responded to questions relating to the newly proposed student listening sessions that will take place throughout the course of the semester, which are intended to gather a deeper understanding of various student perspectives relating to the need for changes on campus. She also commented on expanding students’ understanding of free speech and how it impacts the university’s threshold for hate speech on campus.

Additional business included a review from ASM leaders who attended the Association of Big Ten Students (ABTS) Summer Conference, which involved collaboration on local and national issues with surrounding Big10 student governments.

ASM also passed legislation regarding a new ad hoc committee, “Internal Equity Review Committee of the ASM”. The purpose of the committee is to review the internal processes of ASM to reevaluate how to better represent marginalized students on campus. The committee plans to present a strategy plan by February 24th regarding how ASM can more effectively serve every student.

Finally, Representative Reed Lokken was appointed to the SSFC Committee and Representative Michael Nichols was appointed to the Legislative Affairs Committee.

The next Student Council meeting will be on Wednesday, September 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hearing Room on the 4th Floor of the Student Activity Center at 333 East Campus Mall.
