Wireless computing has come to Madison -- initially in the form of a pilot program at Union South. The pilot is open to DoIT staff and others on campus who have a laptop computer with a wireless card installed and set up to use the network.
Wireless computing has come to Madison -- initially in the form of a pilot program at Union South. The pilot is open to DoIT staff and others on campus who have a laptop computer with a wireless card installed and set up to use the network.
This initial announcement is intended for DoIT staff. Tech Partners will be informed in the next several days. New SOAR students will hear about the pilot as they visit a DoIT information table at the Union. Wireless areas in Union South include the lower level lounge, the Copper Hearth and lounge on the first floor, and the Red Oak Grill.
Several other campus buildings will "go wireless" as summer progresses. The goal is to enable faculty, staff and students to be within a five minute walk of a wireless installation from almost anywhere on campus. Buildings to be added include Grainger, Bascom, Steenbock Library, Memorial Union, and College Library. Memorial Library will be set up by late Fall.
If you have a laptop and want to try the Union network, you can buy a wireless card in the Tech Store. Prices range from $90 for a Mac to $170-250 for a PC. Installation is available. Network setup instructions will be available on the DoIT web and in the Showroom in the next several days.
