ISIS Favorites cleanup process will run this weekend on March 24.

The following message was emailed to ISIS users on Thursday (03/21/13) from: isis.training@em.wisc.edu

Reminder: The ISIS Favorites cleanup process will run this weekend on March 24. As usual, if something in ISIS does not seem to be working properly, call the Help Desk at 264-HELP, option 2.

This message is for anyone who uses the Favorites feature in ISIS. If you have never created or you do not use ISIS Favorites, you may ignore this message.

Summary:

Sometimes an ISIS Favorite can become invalid. This happens when your security is changed, and you no longer have access to a page that you once had access to, (this occurs as people change jobs on campus). It can also happen if a change is made to an ISIS page and the existing favorite link can no longer 'find' the revised page.

When trying to clean up your ISIS favorites, some of you may have found very unclear, technical messages. Depending on the situation, it can actually be impossible for you to delete a 'broken' favorite.

An ISIS team has developed a process to clean up existing 'broken' favorites and to keep them from accumulating in the future. They have finalized a one-time cleanup process that will remove all existing broken favorites. The end result of this one-time cleanup and future routine maintenance is that only valid favorites will appear in your ISIS favorites. Any favorite that is removed from your list because of a page change in ISIS can be re-created by you as needed.

We will perform the ISIS invalid favorites cleanup on March 24. We will send a reminder message. For those interested, more detail follows.

Full Details:

Sometimes an ISIS Favorite can become invalid. This happens when your security is changed and you no longer have access to a page that you once had access to, (this occurs as people change jobs on campus). It can also happen if a change is made to an ISIS page and the existing favorite link can no longer 'find' the revised page. As a result of either of these situations you will see one of the following results:

  • Selecting an existing favorite will result in the display of a different page than expected.

  • Selecting an existing favorite will result in a message stating that you do not have access to the page.

You may have discovered that the current process to delete broken favorites and establish a new one is not clear or friendly. The error message descriptions are very technical and depending on the specific situation, it is sometimes not possible to delete a broken favorite with the available process.

Resolution

An ISIS team has finalized creating and testing a process that will remove all existing broken favorites. This will remove internal system conflicts and allow you to create new, useable favorites as needed. You should no longer see error messages when trying to create new favorites or when modifying your existing favorites. In addition to this one-time cleanup, we will also run a process to do this clean up every time we perform ISIS maintenance. This should keep us from accumulating unusable favorites. The end result of this one-time cleanup and continuing routine maintenance is that only valid favorites will appear on your favorites list, and you will be able to maintain your own list of favorites.

What You Will Need To Do

Not much. In the situation where your job or job responsibilities change and access to the page is removed, you do not need to do anything. If an ISIS page is changed, our new maintenance process will remove any now broken favorites that linked to the old page. You will be able to create a new, working favorite to the new page without seeing any cryptic messages.

Timing

We will run this initial clean-up process on March 24. In the future, this process will then run every time we perform ISIS maintenance.
