Axle, the DoIT development server is moving to a new platform in the AM of Friday Jan 12. Below is a list of problems that may occur and that may result in calls to the help desk:
- Over the night of Thusday 1/11 Oracle databases will be
shut down in order to move them to the new machine.
Your staff who use axle during the evening and night
should refrain from making any changes to their home directories,
as these changes may not be picked up and moved.
(Though the old axle will exist for a while and data can
still be recovered.)
- The new machine's main DNS name is hubcap.doit.wisc.edu.
But the alias of axle.doit.wisc.edu will be moved to
it as well and will continue to work in the future.
- The new system should be up, with DNS changes and Oracle
databases soon after 7:00 AM.
- The old axle.doit.wisc.edu will have a new IP address so
that we can catch anyone who might be connecting to it
using the old IP address instead of the DNS name.
Also, the old name "axle.adp.wisc.edu" will no longer exist.
- Everyone's home directory from the old axle will be moved to the
new system. All logins and passwords should work as they did
on the old system UNLESS passwords have been changed recently.
If that happens, contact, or have them contact:
Larry Nahlik 5-6569 Earl Dukerschein 5-6531 Bob Plankers 2-7783 Bob Mikrut 3-8047
We believe that the change should be transparent to all users, but that doesn't mean I would bet as much as a donut on it.
