In 2020, July 4th falls on a Saturday. This document provides information on the use of the floating holidays.
July 4, 2020 considered a "floating holiday". A "floating holiday" occurs when a holiday falls on a Saturday or when a holiday falls on a Sunday followed by a Monday holiday.
University Staff Employees—Use of Floating Holidays
For University Staff employees, the July 4th floating holidays can be used anytime during calendar year 2020-, but it MUST be used by the end of the calendar year. Given a May 2017 upgrade to HRS (UW payroll system), legal holidays, including floating holidays, must be entered into absence requests. If an employee works on a holiday, the Time Reporting Code of HOLWK (Holiday Worked) must still be added to the timesheet. Timesheets will no longer allow use of Time Reporting Codes FLHOL (Floating Holiday) or NOHOL (No Holiday).
Unclassified Employees-Use of Floating Holidays
For unclassified employees, floating holiday time can be used anytime during the fiscal year in which it is granted (July 1 – June 30), but it MUST be used by the end of the fiscal year. The July 4, 2020 floating holidays can be used anytime in Fiscal Year 2021 (July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021), but it must be used by June 30, 2021. Employees should report usage of the as floating holidays hours on their electronic leave reports. When entering the leave usage in HRS, select Legal Holiday (UNC) as the Absence Take.
If an employee uses the floating holiday and terminates prior to earning it, a negative balance will result and will need to be repaid by the employee.
