Lifelong Learner FAQ

This FAQ will help you, a lifelong learner at UW–Madison with the process for accessing noncredit online courses in Canvas. Canvas is the learning management system UW-Madison uses to hold online classes. This document provides step-by-step guidance on NetID setup, password recovery, and troubleshooting issues such as multiple NetIDs, incorrect email or name, and shared computer registration. Learners will also find instructions for managing multiple course registrations, updating contact information, and ensuring proper access through the Get Started email and Canvas dashboard.

How do I get access to my online class?

What is my NetID?

  • Your NetID is your UW–Madison login credential. If you forgot your NetID:

    • Go to the NetID login screen and click Forgot my NetID.

    • Ensure you completed the verification step during activation (recovery email address).

My NetID or password doesn't work, what do I do?

Can multiple learners share one computer to register?

  • Yes, but follow these rules:

  • If registering and paying separately, completely close and exit your browser between each person.

  • If using combined payment:

    • Option 1: Register others without registering yourself (check the box at the top of the first registration screen).

    • Option 2: Register yourself and others (use Add Another Registrant on the payment page).

  • After payment, each learner must complete their own NetID setup, closing the browser between each person

I signed up for multiple courses and received multiple “Access Your Online Course Site” emails. Do I need to click each Get Started button?

  • Yes. Each email contains a unique link that verifies your registration for that specific course.

    • Click Get Started in each email and log in with your NetID.

    • After completing this step for all courses, you can access them via the UW–Madison Canvas Dashboard.

I have a new email address. How do I update it?

  • UW–Madison employees or degree students: Update your info at my.wisc.edu.

  • Lifelong learners: Contact CERC at 608-262-2451 or registration@cerc.wisc.edu.

  • Canvas updates automatically overnight. For urgent changes, contact your program organizer.

I registered with an incorrect email address. What should I do?

  • Follow the steps in Question 6

  • After correction email the contact for the class to request a resend of the Get Started Email.

I registered with an error in my name (for example, a spelling error). What do I do?

Contact the Continuing Education Registration Center (CERC) at 608-262-2451 or registration@cerc.wisc.edu to change the name on your record.

I accidentally created more than one NetID for myself. What now?

Use the NetID - Multiple NetID Verification Procedure. After completing the process, DoIT HelpDesk will assist with next steps.

My email is linked to a previous position holder. How do I update it?

Contact CERC at 608-262-2451 or registration@cerc.wisc.edu.

I share an email address with someone else. How do we both get access?

Contact CERC at 608-262-2451 or registration@cerc.wisc.edu.
