In this (last) section of the course. We will be discussing Nitrogen (N) losses and carbon (C) losses of environmental concerns and review the literature to understand the sources of these inefficiencies and how to reduce them. Please full syllabus posted on learn@UW for course details.
Intended Learning Outcomes
This section of the course will provide participants with a science-based understanding the "inefficiencies associated with conversion of feed and nutrients in lactating dairy cows. Our discussion will focus the following areas of research :
- Going from Nutrient Requirements to feed conversion efficiency;
- What does MUN tell us about the cow? 1. Factors affecting MUN;
- What does MUN tell us about the cow? 2. The MUN - urinary N - ammonia emission continuum;
- How much urea is recycle? Can urea recycling be enhanced, and if so how?
- Impact of nutrition on C (methane) x N (ammonia and nitrous oxide) losses to the atmosphere.
There will be limited power point presentations. The material will not be presented in the form of "pre-digested" (pun intended) lectures, but rather discussion-based. To achieve our desired learning outcomes, the course and its activities have been modeled after what is now known as "flip-classroom" and "blended learning". Course materials (readings), activities, and assignments have been designed to help course participants to be aware of — and learn how to take advantage of — the current literature on the topic listed above.
Classroom interaction will be reserved primarily for class activities and discussion of pre-assigned material. Students are expected to attend class regularly. In order to create a productive learning environment, students are expected to contribute to each class in the following ways:
- Before class: Read pre-assigned material;
- Before class: Reflect on pre-assigned material and post a pre-class discussion blog entry on the course website;
- During class: Be actively engaged and don't be afraid to share your thoughts;
- After class: Reflect on class discussion and pre-assigned material, and post a post-class discussion blog entry on the course website.
The graded items and their respective weight in the final grade (100 pts max) are presented in the table below:
