How to Attach a Camera Lens
A short overview on how to attach a camera lens to a camera.
How to Attach a Camera Lens
The exact process varies slightly depending on the camera brand, but most interchangeable-lens cameras use a similar mounting system.
- Turn off the camera.
- This helps reduce the chance of dust reaching the camera sensor.
- Remove the body cap.
- Twist the protective cap on the camera body counterclockwise (or as indicated) and set it aside.
- Remove the rear lens cap.
- Take off the cap covering the back of the lens, avoiding contact with the glass or metal contacts.
- Align the mounting marks.
- Find the alignment mark on the camera mount (often a white or red dot).
- Match it with the corresponding mark on the lens.
- Insert the lens.
- Gently place the lens into the camera mount while keeping the alignment marks matched.
- Rotate the lens into place.
- Turn the lens in the direction indicated by the manufacturer (typically clockwise when viewed from the front of the camera) until you hear or feel a click.
- Check that the lens is secure.
- Lightly try to rotate the lens without pressing the lens release button. It should remain locked in place.
- Turn on the camera.
- Verify that the camera recognizes the lens and that autofocus and aperture controls (if applicable) function correctly.
To Remove the Lens
- Turn off the camera.
- Press and hold the lens release button on the camera body.
- Rotate the lens in the opposite direction of installation until it disengages.
- Remove the lens and immediately replace the rear lens cap and the camera body cap to keep dust out.
Tips
- Avoid changing lenses in dusty, sandy, or wet environments.
- Hold the camera with the lens mount facing slightly downward when changing lenses to help prevent dust from entering.
- Never force a lens into the mount. If it does not rotate smoothly, remove it, realign the mounting marks, and try again.
- Keep both the camera mount and lens contacts clean for reliable operation.
