Using the LTI Integration for Canvas & Canvas Credentials
๐ฏ What Is Canvas Credentials?
Canvas Credentials (formerly Badgr) is a digital badging platform that allows instructors to award micro-credentials to students based on specific achievements, skills, or milestones. Through LTI integration, it connects seamlessly with Canvas to automate badge awarding based on module completion or assignment performance.
๐ง Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure the following are in place:
-
โ You have a policy-compliant digital badge created in Canvas Credentials.
-
โ You have a Canvas course.
If you need help designing a compliant badge, consult the UW-Madison badging policy or reach out to your digital badging service team.
๐ช Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Access Canvas Credentials from Your Course
Before you can begin using the LTI tool in your Canvas course, follow these steps:
-
Navigate to your Canvas course.
-
โ Add instructor access for Sarah Korpi or Jessica Palmer so they can assist with setup and monitoring.
-
โ Complete the LEG request form at go.wisc.edu/legrequest to schedule an integration meeting.
If you don’t see the Canvas Credentials tool in your course navigation, don’t worry—it will be enabled before or during the integration meeting.
2. Map Badges to Canvas Activities
Plan how the LTI interface will connect badges to course components:
-
Modules
-
Assignments
-
Quizzes
Consider how you will use access and display logic to ensure badge requirements are met.
-
Badges may be awarded based on:
-
A minimum course score (e.g., 80%)
-
Completion of a specific assessment
-
If using assessment-based criteria, configure Canvas so learners cannot access the assessment until all badge requirements are completed.
3. Meet with Sarah or Jessica
You will need their access levels to link your digital badge with your Canvas course. This collaborative step ensures the badge is properly connected and issued based on your course design.
๐ฃ Tips for Success
-
๐งฉ Align badges with course learning outcomes or durable skills.
-
๐ฃ๏ธ Introduce badges early in the course to build learner buy-in.
