DNS or DHCP migration
Please contact hostmaster@doit.wisc.edu to get answers to additional questions or begin a DNS and/or DHCP migration.
Also see https://kb.wisc.edu/ddi/77034 for additional service information.
DoIT can provide DNS and/or DHCP services for UW-Madison networks via Infoblox. While DNS and DHCP are often closely associated there are no requirements to migrate DNS or DHCP services first. While the rest of the document will refer to "DNS and DHCP" - there are often circumstances where only one of the two services are under consideration.
The first step usually involves ensuring you / your group has access to the Infoblox portal. After initial setup, authorization is configured by a campus Manifest group, the membership of which you / your group will manage.
The next step is to identify all DNS domains and networks for the migration. Additional networks or domains can be added later but it's often easiest to identify everything early in the process.
Migration steps
DNS
If the DNS zone is currently delegated the easiest migration method is to allow AXFR from the host 'ipam-cssc.doit.wisc.edu' to your DNS servers. Once configured, this can be tested. At the time of cutover, one of the Infoblox admins will delete your delegated zone and AXFR the contents from your server. This usually takes less than one minute. At this point, all changes should be made in Infoblox. After one TTL or whenever requests to your server drop off, your DNS service can be turned down.
Alternatively if you can not enable AXFR access on your server, we can use most sources for the records to pre-populate the DNS zone prior to migration. AXFR access is, however, preferred.
In the case of a non-wisc.edu DNS zone, the DNS zone can be pre-created and records pre-populated by the most expedient method. It is then up to the domain owner to configure glue records appropriately, respond to required registrar update requests, monitor and pay for zone renewal. DoIT does not manage external domains. See https://kb.wisc.edu/ddi/8959 for additional information about glue records.
DHCP
DHCP networks can be pre-populated in Infoblox and records provisioned prior to cutover. When the records are acceptable, a cutover can be scheduled. DoIT Network Services will configure the DHCP forwarder for your networks with DHCP services initially deactivated in Infoblox. At the time of cutover, you will turn down your DHCP service and the same will be click/enabled in Infoblox.
