DNS: Active Directory and Dynamic DNS

Dynamic DNS protocols provide the ability to change, in real time, the active DNS configuration.

Active Directory is a technology created by Microsoft that provides a variety of network services, including:

  • LDAP-like directory services
  • Authentication
  • DNS-based naming and other network information
DNS is an integral part of Active Directory. Domain controllers register their network service types in DNS so that other computers in the domain can access them.

However, DNS is just a small portion of the Active Directory services offered. The DNS portion might be served by a Microsoft, ISC BIND, or other DNS server.
