Extension Specialist in Management of Tropical Soils and Mineral Nutrition

This is a 12-month contract that will be 75% extension (Puerto Rico Agricultural Extension Service) and 25% research (Agricultural Experiment Station), available in the Agro-environmental Science Department, College of Agriculture Sciences, University of Puerto Rico, Mayag├╝ez.

The selected candidate will be responsible to develop a recognized extension program and applied research to assist agricultural producers to sustain or improve crop productivity through the implementation of soil management practices and techniques, maintenance or improving the quality of the resources of the agricultural system. The position involves collaboration and interaction with other specialists, agricultural agents, researchers, farmers, professionals from other related agencies, community groups and organizations. The person selected should have problem solving skills and be able to answer queries from farmers and extension agents. The faculty member will actively seek grant funding to support his/her research program and publish in high-quality, high-impact peer-reviewed journals, and participate in scientific meetings and other appropriate professional activities. The candidate will participate in the dissemination of educational material to customers using traditional and electronic media (training, curricular guides, direct consultation, electronic publications, etc.).

The successful candidate must have strong verbal and written communication skills (Spanish and English). Demonstrated knowledge and ability to work effectively with individuals and groups of diverse cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies. This position requires a PhD by start date, in Soil Science or with studies related to Soil Chemistry, Soil Physics, Soil Conservation or closely related field.
