  1. Unit check-ins
    Amy Gilman was named Senior Director for Arts and Media. Sheremains the director of the Chazen and has additional oversight of the Division of the Arts, Wisconsin Public Media and UW Press. In this capacity, she works closely with the provost to strategically align arts units at UW–Madison and raise the profile of the arts on campus. Chris Walker has transitioned in the Provost’s office to the Special Advisor to the Provost on the Arts and remains on faculty ijn the Dance Department. Peter Kleppin has started this fall as the Division’s Communication Director. Kate Hewson has transitioned to a new role in the Theatre and Drama Department, and Samara Frame has started as the Division’s Associate Director. Through these changes, the Division’s priorities and initiatives may be rethought and shifted. Support in recruitment for the arts will continue to be supported, as it elevates the arts as a whole across campus.

    Annemarie Suglio is the new Academic Advisor for the Art Department, focusing on prospective, certificate, and non-degree students. She is a MFA graduate and is a practicing artist in textiles and weaving, photography, and printmaking. The Art Department will be hosting an Open Studio Day on Saturday, November 2 from 12:00-5:00, and all are welcome to attend.

    Nicole Gasiorowski is the new Undergraduate Recruitment Coordinator for the School of Human Ecology. This is a new position that will be working with prospective high school students and current students who may want to explore majors within SoHE. Nicole is a SoHE alumn.

    Kristina Coopman is the new Engagement Manager for Outreach Programs and Events for the Office of Admissions and Recruitment. She will liaise regularly with folks in this working group for events hosted through Visit Bucky, including Open Houses and Future Badger Days (formerly Your UW Days). She is also a practicing artist.

    Scott Shepley announced that the Theatre and Drama Department will be premiering a new adaptation of Pride and Prejudice in two weeks, and auditions are opening soon for Spring Awakening.

    Carrie Backman thanked folks who worked with youth arts programming through Badger Precollege last summer, and shared that about 900 students participated in programming. This year marked the first ever Summer Arts Clinic and was the 95th Summer Music Clinic. Summer Arts Clinic article. They also have added an intern from the Bolz Center to their team. Upcoming events: Band Clinic on November 9.

  2. Experience Wisconsin Open House Recap
    A total of fifteen arts-related sessions were hosted by Music, Theatre & Drama, Art, Art Education, and Dance, and a total of 255 students and guests attend these sessions. No-shows trended upwards in the afternoon sessions, especially in the 4-5pm block.

  3. Arts Recruitment Outlook Calendar
    The purpose is to highlight on- and off-campus events directly related to recruitment across the arts. Individuals in the ARWG can add new events to this calendar. Use emailed instructions to add this Outlook calendar, recruitment@arts.wisc.edu. You may need to use “recruitment_arts@wisc.edu” if you are having trouble. Reach out directly to DoIT if you are unable to access.

  4. Advocacy Form for Admissions in Arts Programs
    This form can be shared with faculty and staff in all Academic Arts Units to submit a recommendation to be considered during admissions decisions for the Fall 2025 admissions cycle. Note that you must be logged into the UW–Madison VPN to access this form. This is for internal recommendations (i.e. UW–Madison Faculty and Staff). Students can request letters of recommendation from their current arts teachers and contacts through their application process. https://apps.admissions.wisc.edu/apply/recommendations/arts/ 

  5. Admitted Student Day for the Arts - April 5, 2025

    The OAR events team will reach out with a call for afternoon session proposals in November. Reach out to Kristina Coopman (kristina.coopman@wisc.edu) if you would like to participate and aren’t typically contacted for Visit Bucky events. Typically, we reach out to Art, Theatre & Drama, Music, Dance, and SoHE (Design Studies). Art History, Landscape Architecture, and The Studio expressed interest in hosting sessions.

    For programming, we recommend for you to be flexible. Note that April 4 is a Future Badger Day (formerly Your UW Day), and students may opt to attend both days.

    Liz Root will reach out for student artwork/performer and student panel recommendations in January.
