Connecting to a Network Drive (SoE)

Instructions for connecting to a network drive on Mac and on Windows. With pictures!

BEFORE STARTING:

Make sure you are connected to the School of Education Network either via ethernet chord in one of our buildings or our VPN service.  Instructions here: VPN instructions

Connecting to a Network Drive

Instructions for connecting to a network drive on Mac and on Windows.

Connecting to a Network Drive from Mac OSX:

1. Open your Finder application: From the top utility bar Click on Go and select Connect to Server.



2. To connect to your personal network share (P: drive): 
In the Connect to Server dialogue box, in the Server Address field, enter smb://maple.ad.education.wisc.edu/username where username is your School of Education username.

Problems connecting?  Try entering the following instead:  smb://maple.ad.education.wisc.edu/home$/username where username is your School of Education username.
3. To connect to your department network share (S: drive):
In the Connect to Server dialogue box, in the Server Address field, enter smb://maple.ad.education.wisc.edu/SOE_Departments/deptname where deptname is the acronym for your department name (ie: CI, EOP, EP, etc.).
4. Click on the + (plus) icon to add the server name to your Favorite Servers.

5. When you are prompted for your credentials be sure to select "Registered User".  Enter your School of Education username and password NOTE: username usually defaults to your computer username on the mac machine you're using but you must use your School of Education username and password.



6. Click Connect to continue. 

7. Optional: In your Finder preferences be sure that you have "connected servers" selected to display on your desktop/sidebar for quick access.

Connecting to a Network Drive from Windows 7:

1. Right click on Computer (located in the Start menu) and select Map network drive...



2. To connect to your personal network share (P: drive):
In the Drive field, select the P: drive
In the Folder field, enter \\maple.ad.education.wisc.edu\home$\username where username is your School of Education username
3. To connect to your department network share (S: drive):
In the Drive field, select the S: drive
In the Folder field, enter \\maple.ad.education.wisc.edu\SOE_Departments\deptname where deptname is the acronym for your department (ie: CI, EOP, EP, etc.)
4. Check the box to Connect using different credentials.



5. Click on Finish.

6. Enter your School of Education username and password when prompted.

Connecting to a Network Drive from Windows 10:

1. Open File Explorer (start > search > file explorer) and navigate to: This PC > Computer > Map Network Drive



2. Select any open drive letter and enter the desired path you wish to map.

Common Locations:
Personal Drive: \\maple.ad.education.wisc.edu\home$\username where username is your School of Education username
Department Share Drives \\maple.ad.education.wisc.edu\SOE_Departments\deptname where deptname is the acronym for your department (ie: CI, EOP, EP, etc.)
4. Check the box to Connect using different credentials.  Enter your School of Education credentials, be sure to enter soe-ad\ before your username and confirm that the "domain" field changes to "soe-ad".

5. Click OK
