Blackboard Collaborate known issue:

Problem: Unable to load PowerPoint slides into Blackboard Collaborate with Office 2013 (Office 365 version)
  • If the computer has recently had MS Office 2013 (Office 365 version) installed or upgraded and is now having problems loading PowerPoint slides into Blackboard Collaborate, there may be an incompatibility between the two systems. Users can try the following work-arounds to get the slides loaded until Microsoft and Blackboard Collaborate resolve the issue.
    • Note: While loading content, users have received an error box pop-up on the screen similar to the following:

Reason: Incompatibility
  • When loading slides, Blackboard Collaborate relies on the MS PowerPoint software to facilitate the slide conversion process. It appears that Blackboard Collaborate is not currently compatible with Microsoft Office 2013 during this process because it cannot find the PowerPoint 2013 that is installed on the user's computer to do the slide conversion. Therefore, an error is produced indicating that the .ppt or .pptx file type is not supported for loading.
    • Note: Down-saving the file version does not solve the problem. This is not a file version issue, it is an issue with Blackboard Collaborate's inability to find PowerPoint 2013 on the user's computer.

Solution 1: Re-install an earlier version of MS Office
  • An easy way to resolve the issue is to rollback and re-install an earlier version of MS Office such as Office 2010. Blackboard Collaborate will then be able to associate the file(s) to MS office and find the PowerPoint to do the slide conversion and upload.

Solution 2: Install Open Office
  • A work-around according to Blackboard Collaborate is that Blackboard Collaborate is compatible with Open Office 4.0. So if Open Office is installed on the computer and opened once, then Blackboard Collaborate can use Open Office to convert the PowerPoint slides during the Blackboard Collaborate "Load Content" upload process.
  • Warning: Please note that EPD IT has had mixed success with this work-around. PowerPoint files created in MS Office may or may not display properly in Open Office, and thus may not get converted and uploaded properly in Blackboard Collaborate. Make sure to verify the PowerPoint file in Open Office, and to do a test upload of the PowerPoint slides in Blackboard Collaborate to make sure that everything looks correct.

Solution 3: Save all slides as images
