4.3.2 Media Guidelines :: Communications - Media Guidelines - What to Know about Engaging the News Media
Working with news media is a critical component of how Extension communicates with communities about events and value. Here you can find resources for media engagement.

Whether answering a reporter’s question or sending a news release, please keep in mind the connection to Extension programming. All of our talking points, answers, etc. should refer to and explain Extension programming and the services or research we provide for communities.

Sending a news release

Visit this link for guidelines on creating an elevator speech, getting your message out, writing a news release, and tips for working with media.

Answering questions

Always try to keep answers limited to your area of expertise or knowledge. Feel free to redirect questions you don’t feel comfortable answering; you can do so to a specialist in a topic area, your Area Extension Director, or Extension’s Office of Communications & Stakeholder Engagement.

When in doubt, please contact Extension’s Office of Communications & Stakeholder Engagement - we are happy to work with reporters on your behalf or consult on responses.
