This document establishes safe procedures for the storage, handling, and use of compressed gas cylinders to protect personnel, equipment, and facilities. It ensures compliance with applicable OSHA standards, particularly 29 CFR 1910.101 (Compressed Gases) and other relevant sections.
1. Scope & Responsibilities
What is the scope of this SOP?
This SOP applies to all employees, contractors, and visitors who store, transport, or use compressed gas cylinders in any work area.
Who is responsible for compressed gas safety?
- Supervisors: Ensure compliance with this SOP, provide training, verify proper PPE use, and document findings through Shop Inspections.
- Employees: Follow all safe handling practices, inspect cylinders before use, and report hazards.
- Workplace Safety: Update procedures according to regulatory changes and serve as a technical resource.
Key Definitions
- Compressed Gas Cylinder: A container designed to store gas under pressure exceeding 40 psi at 70°F.
- Valve Protection Cap: A removable cover designed to protect the cylinder valve from physical damage.
- Empty Cylinder: A cylinder containing residual pressure but no usable product.
2. Operating Procedures
General Handling Practices
- Handle all cylinders as if they are pressurized.
- Inspect cylinders before each use for leaks, corrosion, dents, or other defects.
- Keep valve protection caps in place whenever cylinders are not actively in use.
- Never drop, drag, or roll cylinders; always use an approved cylinder cart or transport device.
- Never lift cylinders by the valve or protection cap.
Storage Requirements
- Store cylinders upright and secure them with chains or straps to a stable, fixed structure.
- Separate oxygen cylinders from fuel gas cylinders by at least 20 feet or with a 5-foot non-combustible barrier.
- Keep cylinders away from heat sources, open flames, and electrical circuits.
- Store in a well-ventilated, dry location protected from direct sunlight and corrosive environments.
- Post clear warning signs: “COMPRESSED GAS – NO SMOKING OR OPEN FLAMES.”
Use & Operation Protocols
- Open cylinder valves slowly using the proper regulator and wrench.
- Ensure regulators, hoses, and fittings are undamaged and compatible with the gas type.
- Never use oil or grease on oxygen cylinder valves or regulators.
- Stand to the side of the regulator when opening the cylinder valve.
- Close valves when cylinders are not in use, even if they are empty.
- Use cylinders only in well-ventilated areas.
Empty & Out-of-Service Cylinders
- Mark empty cylinders as “EMPTY” or “MT” and ensure the valve is completely closed.
- Replace valve protection caps and return cylinders to designated storage.
- Segregate damaged or defective cylinders immediately for return to the supplier.
3. Safety Controls, PPE & Training
What PPE is required when handling cylinders?
- Eye & Face Protection: Safety glasses or face shields during all cylinder handling.
- Hand Protection: Suitable gloves for handling metal cylinders.
- Footwear: Protective steel-toe footwear recommended when moving heavy cylinders.
Training & Inspection Requirements
All employees who handle compressed gas cylinders must receive training covering potential hazards, safe handling procedures, and emergency response.
- Visual inspections of cylinders are required prior to each use.
- Cylinders must undergo hydrostatic testing in accordance with DOT and manufacturer guidelines.
- Supervisors must document inspection findings and corrective actions during Shop Inspection PMs.
- Training records, inspection logs, and incident reports must be maintained for a minimum of 3 years.
4. Emergency Response & Resources
What should I do in an emergency?
In Case of a Gas Leak:
- Evacuate the immediate area.
- Notify your supervisor and EHS immediately.
- If safe to do so, move leaking cylinders to a well-ventilated outdoor location.
- Activate the fire alarm immediately.
- Evacuate according to the facility emergency action plan.
- Do not attempt to extinguish flames involving cylinders unless trained to do so.
CRITICAL: Never attempt unsafe entry or mitigation during an uncontrolled compressed gas release or fire.
