macOS Computer Setup

These are the steps involved in setting up your new Mac from the Geoscience department.

The following document shows you examples of some of the screens you will see when setting up your new computer. Campus requires we keep an inventory of devices, as well as maintain basic security standards. Enrolling your computer in remote management allows IT to follow those requirements on Geoscience devices.

Initial Boot

Press the power button on your device and when prompted join a WiFi network (UWNet if on campus) if your computer is not connected to ethernet.

Follow the macOS setup screens until the Remote Management prompt comes up.

Click Continue, then sign in with your UW NetID and password.

When the Create a Computer Account window appears the user name and password are auto-filled with your UW NetID and password. You should not edit those, but you may edit the Full name field.

Please enable Location Services. This can aid in finding lost or stolen devices.

Finish the initial setup prompts until you are presented with your new computer's desktop.

SSO Extension

The SSO Extension stores your campus credentials so when you are connecting to a resource like Research Drive you are not prompted for your password.

If you are not on campus you will not be able to authenticate. Complete this step when you are connected to the campus network.

When you reach the desktop of you new device you will be prompted to sign in to AD.WISC.EDU. Use your NetID and password for this.

After signing in you will be prompted to verify your Active Directory password, and local account password. These should both be your NetID password unless you changed the local password at account creation.

After verifying your passwords your local account password will be synced with your NetID password. This is a one way sync. Your local account will sync to whatever your NetID password is.

FileVault Disk Encryption

Some time after your device is set up (usually only a few minutes) you will receive a notification prompting you to log out so FileVault can be enabled. FileVault encrypts your disk to protect your data should your device be lost or stolen.
Log out, then log back in.

When you log back in you will see a prompt telling you FileVault encryption is required.

 Click Enable Now and a few seconds later your device will be encrypted.

Software Installation

Your device has an application called Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub installed in the Applications folder. There is a small library of applications available to be installed via the application. You can also launch the Hub application from your menubar.

When you first launch the application you will get a privacy notice.

Click Run next to whichever applications you wish to install. Installations typically take only a minute. Installing this way will always install the most up to date version of applications.
