UW-Madison Google Workspace - Getting Started with Google Vids
This document introduces Google Vids, a core application that uses Google's Gemini AI to help you create and edit videos.
What is Google Vids?
Google Vids is an app that lets you create, edit, and share videos. It offers AI features that make video creation and editing easier. Many of these features are powered by Google's Gemini AI.
How do I use Google Vids?
Log in to Google Vids using your UW-Madison Google Workspace account. When you sign into Google Vids, a new video file will open, and you'll see a few ways to start:
-
Record and Share: Record yourself, your screen, or both in real-time to start your video.
-
Upload and Create: Bring in videos or audio from your computer to edit them into a full video.
-
Start with a Template: Use pre-made layouts, similar to Google Slides templates, to kickstart your video project.
-
Import Slides: Turn your Google Slides presentations directly into videos.
-
Blank Vid: Start fresh with an empty timeline and build your video from scratch.
No matter how you begin, you'll see a typical video editor layout:
-
Timeline at the bottom for arranging your clips
-
Viewing tools on the top left
-
Toolbar on the right
These tools are similar to what you'd find in Google Slides or Drawings, but they also include options to start recording, add text scripts, upload videos, and find stock images.
What are the limits of Google Vids?
Keep the following limits in mind when you're using Google Vids:
-
Clip Length: Any video or audio clips you record directly in Vids can be up to 10 minutes long.
-
Uploaded Media Length/Size: You can upload video and audio clips that are up to 35 minutes long or 4 GB in size. However, if an uploaded video is longer than 10 minutes, you can only shorten it until it's under 10 minutes before you can make other edits.
-
Storage: Any media you add needs to be smaller than the free space in your Google Drive.
-
Object Limit: Each video can have a maximum of 50 video clips and 50 audio clips. This includes music, sound effects, and voiceovers.
-
Mobile Editing: Right now, you can only create and edit Vids on a desktop computer's web browser, not on phones or tablets.
